From IE5 HELP:

> [@](#):
>
> To change Internet Explorer sounds
>
> You can change the sounds associated with using Internet Explorer. You can assign different sounds than the ones currently used, or you can turn off the sounds altogether. To do this, carry out the following steps:
>
> Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
> Double-click the Sounds icon.
> In the Windows Explorer area of the Events list, click the event you want to change.
> In the Name list, click the sound you want to associate with that event.
> If you don’t want any sound associated with that event, click None.

The part that is not intuitively obvious is that when you double-click the Sounds icon, you are not looking at the sounds for the whole system, but the sounds for Windows. (Note the offset Windows icon above the sound prompts for Asterisk, Close Program, Critical Stop, etc.) There are special settings for Explorer, Office, etc.

At a guess, the sound you wnat to turn off is one or both of the “Navigation” sounds under _Windows Explorer_ or else “Select” under _Windows_. (WAG because I haven’t tried messing with it.)
