There are unpopular opinions, and there are unacceptable opinions. “Star Trek sucks” is an unpopular opinion, yet somehow I’ve yet to be banned. “It’s okay to kill Palestinian children because they’re just going to grow up to be terrorists” is an unacceptable opinion in civilized company, and I’m more than a little disappointed that **Clint** wasn’t immediately banned for it. And I don’t have a problem with some opinions being unacceptable here. Most of what **Clint** “thinks” is so far off the social norm that he adds nothing to debate, and serves only to derail it by shifting attention from the matter at hand to his own reprehensible ideas. It’s depressing that this needs to be pointed out, but being called an asshole on the interent is not remotely comparable to being beaten by a mob. At any rate, pile-ons don’t happen because the Dopers as a group sent blood in the water and attack a guy just 'cause everyone else is doing that. Pile-ons happen because somebody does something that offends a whole lot of people, and every one of them wants to get their two cents in. Every person in this thread is attacking **Clint** because they feel personally insulted by what he says. It’s not about being part of a mob: it’s precisely the opposite. Most of the people here would be responding the same way if they were the only person in this thread. Holy shit Miller… I had a great response all ready to go and you somehow tapped into my conciousness and typed it for me… thanks. **Futile Gesture** - An opinion (according to Webster’s) is a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter. We all have hold opinions on a wide variety of topics and we express our opinions here all day and all night, usually without any problems. The expression of certain opinions are grounds for being banned, especially if the poster in question fails to heed warnings from the administration telling them to cease those expressions. **Clint** … if you really aren’t enjoying all the attention being lavished upon you I would suggest you take my advice by taking a little vacation from here. Not that I remotely agree with what Clint said in that thread, but it’s hardly an over-the-top opinion. Illigal immigrants _are_ breaking the law, and I can see a fairly large amount of logic in the idea that, if caught, they ought to be punished for it, or at least prevented from further infractions by re-patriating them. However, my own position is that education is a universal good, no matter where the student was born, and that US immigration law is so fucked on a fundamental level that it deserves to be ignored. ---

Making nasty, hateful remarks—and then paraphrasing them in a cleaned-up form in order to complain that people who dislike them are “being overly sensitive”—is assholish behavior. ---
