> If the GOP was creative, they’d have Mitch McConnell announce that Donald Trump will be impeached on Day 1 of his Presidency, making Mike Pence President. Then it is effectively Clinton vs. Pence, and it’s not as if there isn’t cause to impeach Trump.

Yes! That would guarantee not only Democratic control of the Senate, but the House and most State houses, as well as the RNC. Great idea, **adaher**! Let’s hope they do it.

Cartoonist Ben Sargent distinguished between [the two factions](https://www.texasobserver.org/ben-stargent-loon-star-state-tea-partiers/) in a recent _Texas Observer_.

Yeah, the Tea Party is now in third. The establishment started winning primaries in 2014 and now you’ve got this Trump thing at the head of the party, although there are no Trump-type candidates in downballot races, so hopefully this disease is purged once Trump goes down in flames.

Yeah, you do. Ever wonder how that happened? Maybe because that’s who Republicans are?

Pishtosh. Your slate is chock full of misogynists, racists, Islamophobes, etc. Again, that’s who Republicans \*are \*today. That’s who \*you \*pick as \*your \*candidates.

Nope. He’s just a symptom. The disease has been strengthening for years an will continue.

> How would it be a “constitutional crisis” for electors to vote their choice for President? If anything it would be a return to the original understanding of the role of electors. It could be argued that this would be the use of that power that the founding fathers intended.

Because if they select Pence they will be voting for someone who was not selected by Republican primary voters. The lawsuits from Cruz and the other candidates who received votes in the primaries would make Bush-Gore look like nothing.

</div>

But the GOP is a private organization, so how would it be constitutional crisis or a matter for the courts if they decide to go with another candidate?

</div>

Because there are ballot deadlines. Plus a private organization has to have rules for replacing candidates already nominated and under what conditions that can be done. since there is no owner it’s not like Rance Priebus can just make a decision like that on his own.

> Pretty sure Pence is waiting until after the debate, when he’ll have a better idea of how fast the ship is sinking and how best he can be viable in 2020.

Since Trump didn’t do a bad as everyone feared or hoped, then Pence is staying.
