Hmmm… seems like a thread I started in General Questions ([http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=38145](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=38145)) got closed. Now I realise that the subject might not really belong in the General Questions section (but it was a question and rather general to my knowledge), but I didn’t think it needed closed right away. It certainly is not really different from someone asking help on their history assignment, it really is something I need some help in if anyone is interesting in providing it to me.
Now, is it just that I’m not aware of some regulation of this board (there’s nothing in the faq though), or did it get closed for another reason?

I checked, the thread you noted was not “closed” but simply had no replies. there is a difference. Perhaps no one had an answer?

Nope, it’s closed. Don’t know why. Maybe the powers that be thought IMHO would be a more appropriate forum since you asked for advice. But that’s just a guess.

A mod may be along to explain, but the short answer is probably: you posted in the wrong forum at a bad time. MPSIMS would have been the place, I guess. GQ is more for factual questions with a definite answer rather than “can you help me?” “Yes!” questions. Some of the homework threads seem to have been closed too. Last week it might have been moved, but right now we appear to have an influx of people being disruptive. Mods are manning the pumps and don’t have time to move stuff and politely mention why. They may also be somewhat grumpy.

While I can’t speak officially for **manhattan** , the GQ Moderator, I believe **picmr** has explained the situation fairly accurately. It’s just inappropiate to post what is essentially your _curriculum vitae_ on this message board. You might wanna try a more broad based appeal for advice in IMHO, or even MPSIMS.
As for people seeking employment and homework help via the Straight Dope, while not usually a mortal sin, it’s not something we encourage either.

You were the innocent victim of an unusual confluence of events.
First, I was cranky. Really cranky, because of that “Compact Disk Milk” person who spammed GQ with inappropriate stuff.
Second, I didn’t have a ton of time this morning. So I had to just do what I had to do. I didn’t have my normal luxury of providing an explanation.
Third, the post was indeed in the wrong forum.
Finally, I misread your comment “feel free to close this thread and kick my foreign butt” to mean that if the thread were closed, you’d know why and re-post it somewhere else.
I should have moved the thread, or at least explained it was being closed in GQ. I apologize for that.
