Ave Maria is a Catholic law school- accredited- but it’s not Catholic like Notre Dame so much as HYPER Catholic, as in what Bob Jones U is to most Methodist affiliated liberal arts colleges or as in most churchgoing Catholics would find their policies “get a life” strict. Not sure if that weakens or strengthens their comments on his character and fitness. ---

One of the posts from Shirvell’s blog: “Chris Armstrong has participated in numerous homosexual orgies in U Mich dorm rooms, one in October 2009”. I didn’t know that “U Mich dorm rooms” was a synonym for “my nightly fantasies”. Part of me hopes that Shirvell will be forced to get help and emerge from this a better person. Another part of me hopes “forced to get help” will mean ‘end up living under a bridge in Milwaukee in February’. Though he’s missing a sure bet by not dropping the Catholicism and moving to Topeka where I’m sure the Phelps clan would provide him with a teenaged wife or two. He could even join the law firm. ---

Pretty sure everybody sitting for a state bar has to go through a “character and fitness” check before being certified to take the bar. Despite the name, its not much more than a background check - i.e. any arrests, DUI’s, incidents of scholastic dishonesty, etc. Fortunately, it doesn’t require soul schmears or there would be far fewer attorneys out there. Ava Maria may be a little more “in-depth” than most. ---

Just saw an update to this story and thought it might be fun to share: Asshole Andrew Shirvell has been ordered to [pay $4.5 million](http://news.yahoo.com/lawyer-ordered-pay-4-5m-gay-u-m-222810693.html) to the gay student he attacked as a Michigan assistant attorney general (he’s since been fired). I find it interesting that the AP story you linked only calls Shirvell’s blog an “anti-gay blog.” The blog was called _ **Chris Armstrong Watch** _! What would he have had to call his blog in order for them to recognize it targeted one guy? ---

Armstrong sued Shirvell. Armstrong was willing to settle for an apology and a retraction. Shirvell, who represented himself, declined and held his ground that his blog was a freedom of speech issue. The jury awarded Armstrong 4.5 million. Shirvelle says he’s unemployed and there’s no way he can pay that amount. Wasn’t Shirvell a lawyer? A crappy one, apparently.
