He won the Presidency because he beat his opponents on substance, character, temperment, intelligence and judgement. For all those whining about this perfectly meritorious and appropriate decision by the Nobel Committee, who do you think SHOULD have won? By the way, giving Obama the award just to spite GWB is an absolutely valid and commendable all by itself. ---

Anyway, the Nobel prizes are nothing like the Oscars; winners end up in history books, not as footnotes on IMDB. It’s not about Bush caring, it’s about rewarding the US for the reversal of his policies, and encouraging the US – as a country – to continue in its new direction. The purpose of the award is to try to influence future events as much or more than to reward past accomplishments. That doesn’t cheapen the prize, it enriches it. ---
