Coach under fire for remarks caught on tape.

Yea, its kind of hard to tell if it was meant as a racial slur or not, but even if not it seems pretty egregious for the teacher to stop in the middle of his jog to start dumping on a kid in front of his peers.

I don’t know what’s more depressing, this story or the hateful comments after it. For some reason, I always read the comments, even when I know it’s going to be awful. I’m a sadomasochistic I guess, lol.

With the Penn State business and the crap in New Jersey with the HS coach acting like his players are victims for being benched a few games after practically beating a kid to death, you have to get in line to be asshole coach of the year.

It may very well be that race had nothing to do with it. There shouldn’t be any ‘racial implications’ about welfare. Welfare shouldn’t be a colored v white person issue (and really, it isn’t). It’s very well possible that the racial makeup of the kid she interacts with is mostly black. If this is the coach’s attitude - Mr. Tough Guy - then of course he makes those comments to black kids. Because they are his students. He teaches black kids! Or maybe he makes those comments to everyone, but only the black kids see it as racist.

And while that was a really stupid thing to say, I’ve said worse. Not because I’m terrible, but because I have that kind of relationship with my students. (You should hear what they say to me in jest.) While the coach was being a total asshole, I’m not convinced that he was being a racist prick. Not at all, really. I don’t even know what he’s like in his classroom. He teaches in a high school. Maybe even a rough one. And it’s very possible that kid had shit grades and attendance.

To say to a black kid, “If you don’t do your homework, you’ll end up on welfare” shouldn’t be racist because the kid is black. I heard the same thing growing up and I went to a school with 1 black student. It IS mean, though, especially in front of the kids’ peers. If I were a teacher at that school, I’d be pissed.

It doesn’t sound like the coach makes demeaning statements about black students because they are black, but rather has shit communication skills with his students.

I don’t use the welfare thing with my students because so many of them are or are related to drug dealers and gang members. Who needs welfare when you have that cash? I’m more likely to tell them they’ll be locked up or dead if they don’t shape the F up. But none of my kiddos are going to say, “Miss Citizenpained has a history of picking on us!” because we love each other. What I saw in that coach is what I see in a lot of teachers, unfortunately. They try to jest but come off as condescending and sarcastic assholes, then it comes across as racism, and then you have something like this.

My students have been calling one of the other teachers racist for weeks (behind her back). Not because she is racist. It’s because of how she talks to them. She (a white teacher) talks to them like her (white) teachers talked to her, and then they get mad, and then they act tough and start talking back and she has no idea why these kids are so bad and then they’re screaming fbombs at her and they get sent home for the day and then they tell their parents she’s a racist white bitch who hates them and…you get the idea.

I’m 99 per cent sure this guy wasn’t intending on making a racist remark. Racist teachers typically don’t coach in urban schools. I am 200 per cent sure he was being a dickhead and could use a little WTF ARE YOU THINKING?! training.

How about this for “tough love”?

The coach who gave that to his players was stripped of his coaching duties but was allowed to keep his job as a guidance counselor at the school.

Ahhh! That was horrible. To the point that I would have been skeptical myself until I heard it with my own ears.

“colored”?

You have been more and more dickish over the last few months. I’ve lost a good deal of the respect I once had for you because of it.

You’d be cranky too if your ass was numb from sitting on the fence all the time.

It’s true. I once saw him make a somewhat dismissive remark at a man in Reno, just to castigate him for a poorly made point.

This is the quote that made me drop my jaw and go looking for it:

Why? So he can harm even more children than he could as a coach.

I’d like to think that the standards for a guidance counselor - since they not only have to help students determine schedules and which colleges they apply to but also have to, you know, counsel - would be higher than those of a coach.

It’s getting to where we need an ombudsman with the authority to go up to coaches, counselors, and administrators who do stuff this stupid and beat them with a stick.

Hahaha, insensitive but probably true. Maybe a good wake up call for some students.

Okay, that’s a “thumbs-up” from one of our beloved racists…
