The CDC has different campuses. The Buford Hwy campus is where the level 4 containment areas are. I doubt there are tours. The security there is some of the highest I have ever been through. To get into the animal testing area I had to go through decon on the way in and out. All my tools had to go through decon as well. It was hell trying to work in a big plastic suit. Luckily I didn’t have to be on outside air just a surgical mask. All the animals had been removed. The Clifton Rd. campus is more administrative and research. Security is not quite as tight there about equal to the Federal Reserve. Not sure what they do at the Executive Park campus (HR I think) but security was no worse than at the airport. You would probably need to get in contact with someone who works there and check with them.
Don’t watch The Walking Dead and think that that’s the actual CDC. That is the Cobb Performing Arts Center. You can go there to see Garth Brooks or some such.
Just for that? No, unless you’re absolutely fascinated with Coca Cola (my great uncle would have loved it).
I only went because I live in Atlanta and had tourists visiting.
A tour of the CDC may not be possible, but they do have a museumon the grounds.
I wouldn’t detour all the way over from I-95 just for the World O’ Coke, but if you happen to be in the city it’s worth a look. It’s been a few years since my last visit but I recall a lot of vintage Coca-Cola advertising art on display, and I mean originals of those great lush 30s and 40s paintings, as well as some Toonerville Trolley Coke stuff I never even knew existed.
Also, the name of the horrifying Italian soda is “Beverly”. Burned into my memory, that one is.
Lots of other touristy stuff in Centennial Park, as others have mentioned.
