Cocaine: What's the big deal?

I remember cocaine being the cadillac of available recreational drugs back in the late 70’s. I never happened to be around anyone who had any at that point. I remember being curious about it, though. Of course, this was also when I started working with ex-offenders, so I don’t know that I would have tried it.

Later on, when it got really, really popular and I started seeing clients on it, I was glad I’d never tried it.

Certainly there are folks who’ve tried it and not become addicted. Certainly, those who’ve become addicted have horror stories (as do their loved ones, often). To me, the biggie was - how was I supposed to know beforehand which group I’d be in?

Said it before on an earlier post. I did it, had no problem. A little bump or two a night is all I desired. I then go drink beer at a bar, plus a little weed. Small amounts enhanced my social skills. Most of my friends did it and managed it. But there was that one in 4-5 that just could not handle it. Guys you really liked but could not hang with. You and I never came close to addiction. To some, it is quite intense.

I tried it a few times, when someone offered it to me, but could never figure out why anyone would pay so much for it. All it did was intensify the manic state that I could easily get into all by myself in those days. I saw people around me spending way more than they could afford to do it every weekend, and just couldn’t understand. I ended up losing a few friends to it, though none of them died. they just became complete jerks.

I’ve tried cocaine (both powder and crack) several times, often with friends who said it was great stuff and they were really getting off on it, but I’ve never gotten off on it. The only effect I’ve ever noticed is that sometimes after doing it I’m talking faster than I was before. Is it possible that I’m immune to coke or are my friends just gullible?

These threads have such a tendancy to turn into forums for relating personal experience… Danger number two is of course this whole thing being moved around to GD or even IMHO.

It´s all very relative, I´ve personally known people from both corners. I´ve seen people turn their lives over to the stuff and then I´ve also known people who could literally take it or leave it.

As to it´s inherent dangers, I think processed cocaine is probably a lot more risky than the original leaves. I have chewed coca leaves in Amsterdam, where they can be bought legally, and it was a very mild experience. I can´t say I´d be opposed to them being as freely available as coffee.

I suppose here I need to add something along the lines of “cocaine is currently illegal and its blackmarket price far outweights its worth”.

Imagine if a pack of cigarettes were to be over $150 or a bottle of beer to be over $100 (and I’m not talking here about boutique beers) - then you may well get the chance to see a coffee drinking selling his body parts or a cigarette smoker hocking her family jewels to get the drug…
