Stephen Colbert is on Meet the Press for 10/21. I’m trying to decide if Russert is taking this seriously and missing the joke or if he’s playing along as a serious straight man.
I thought Russert was playing along with the joke. Parts of mainstream America might take Colbert’s appearance at face value, however. My mother watched Meet the Press this morning. She’s now convinced that Stephen Colbert is “a psycho” who wants to get rid of her Social Security. I spent 10 minutes on the phone with her this morning trying to explain that he was just playing a character.
Oh, I am so hoping he takes this all the way! I miss the Pat Paulsen campaigns. I was never old enough to vote for him but I remember being interested enough to follow the whole electorial seasons back then. Hell, I may even vote for him. I’ve been pulling for Billary (yeah, I said it. so there) since she announced. (I have more thoughts on that but they don’t belong in this thread) But now, Stephen Colber is my candidate of choice. I wondoer if he’ll do the smart thing and take on Jon Stewart as his runing mate?
Tim Russert was definitely in on the joke - he knows all about the difference between Stephen and “Stephen.” There were times when both of them were trying not to crack up.
To the person who asked earlier: he teaches Sunday School to first-graders.
While your ideas intrigue me and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter, that ticket could only end badly when I’m found in hotel rooms with them…
He very pointedly took out a Colbert/Stewart '08 bumper sticker and cut Stewart’s name out of it on his show last week, so I doubt he’s going to involve Jon in the whole thing.
He did some great stuff Thursday contrasting what he can say as a talk show host (waxing enthusiastic about Nachos) and as a candidate (just eating them). The red line down the center of the screen was a nice touch.
emphasis mine
That to me sounds like a whiney little kid who doesn’t like the game and is going to change the rules to suit his needs. Aren’t cable stations exempt from the Equal Air Time law/act/whatever-it-is?
eta: IOW isn’t that EXACTLY what he’s trying to do?
Typical GOP Family Values, suggesting that a married man with small children get a sports car & a girlfriend. In any case…
Yep, “if you can meet the constitutional requirements.” That’s pretty much true of any constitutional regime. If you can prove you’re next in line, you can become Prince of Wales. So let’s look at the GOP’s “requirement”: $35,000 in one of 50 states? Shall we expect someone to have to spend $1,750,000 to make a bid for the GOP nomination? That’s not the Presidency, that’s just a nomination. This is why I consider the GOP a party of bribery.
