Colbert Report revisited

That was great.
“You have to admit this doesn’t look good.”

I couldn’t think of any Italian names that don’t end in a vowel either.

The only one that came to mind was Christopher Columbus - but since that was the English version, I thought "aha - well, in Spain, they refer to him as Cristofo Colon. But then I realized that in Italy, it would be Colombo - rats…

Wait, wait!! Sophia Loren!

There - what do I win?

Oprah Strikes a Blow for Truthiness

A commentary on the Million Little Pieces incident that calls on Colbert’s Truthiness very well…hee hee!

Well, if you watch them as a block, did you not notice that Jon Stewart regularly acts as Stephen’s foil? They do that quick zing as a transition between shows.

If you watch them both, did you not notice that this bit is on TDS and not on TCR?

And if it works there, wouldn’t it also work as part of the main show?

The thing is, there is still lots of room on that show for Colbert to go in all kinds of directions if it starts to get stale. You know what might be hilarious? If he had a ‘political roundtable’ a la McLaughlin Group, with a bunch of comedians sitting in as pundits. Imagine a roundtable with Steve Corddry, Jon Stewart, Colbert, and one or two others (maybe even mix in a real pundit as well). Do that once a week for variety. It could be hilarious.

Good one. I hope Colbert looks into this thread!

Didn’t they try that once before? As I recall, it was called “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher”.

Once I read the AVClub interview, I see that my concerns earlier are probably unfounded. It read as Colbert-the-actor, not the character.

OK-I give you Chappelle.

I loathe South Park. I have never found it funny.

Here’s another Italian name: DeAngelis. I know someone with that name and he’s second generation American.

As long as we are doing Italians whose names don’t end in vowels:
Both my Father’s and Mother’s name do end in Vowels but out next door neighbors growing up who both came over from Italy as Adults were Thomas.
(Pronounced Toe Mas).

South Park is a take it or leave it show. I love it, but I understand why many do not.

Jim

No, no… In this case, the entire roundtable would be a put-on. Just like Colbert’s interviews. All of them playing parts, maximized for ccomedy effect.

Politically Incorrect was basically a bunch of vapid Hollywood airheads giving us their important opinions on subjects they didn’t have a clue about, sprinkled with actual experts who did and had to look uncomfortable.

Well I said it in the original Colbert Report thread, but it’s worth repeating here – The Colbert Report is my favorite television show, period. I tape it every night and watch it before I go to work in the morning. There’s nothing like starting the day off laughing hysterically. On the train, I burst out laughing remembering lines from the show, and then when I get to work, people keep asking me why I’m so cheerful. The Word is my favorite segment, but I don’t think there’s any segment I don’t enjoy. I especially like the meta-comedy Stephen is building with stuff like the whole “truthiness” controversy and references to various mentions of the show in the media.

The Daily Show was always take-it-or-leave-it with me, although I’m now taping it nightly just to see the handoff to TCR. But Colbert is something special. I agree with Podkayne – sometimes it feels like the show is being written just for me. He often refers specifically to things that interest me, or makes the exact same joke that I would make about something.
