One of my Facebook friends has become virulently Islamophobic recently, and he claims there was a “deafening silence” of Muslim voices condemning the recent Paris attacks. That is, of course, ridiculous, as any quick googling will indicate. But I’m hoping that someone has been collecting and organizing links to Muslims around the world condemning the attacks, so I can provide him with one overwhelming link.

Anyone know of such a page?
thanks!

> [@](#):
>
> The outpouring of support for the victims and and disgust for the attacks began even before ISIS, the militant terrorist group current terrorizing entire sections of Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the carnage. Muslim imams, scholars, commentators, and average Muslims expressed grief and horror using social media. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, an Islamic movement founded in British India in the 19th century, released a statement rebuking the “barbaric attacks.”
>
> In Ireland, the Imam of the Al-Mustafa Islamic Centre and Chair of the Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council, offered prayers for the victims and dismissed terrorist’s claims to Islam.
>
> “My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Paris and every other place on earth plagued by sick men with weapons and bombs,” Imam Umar Al-Qadri said. “Terrorists have no religion whatsoever. Their religion is intolerance, hatred for Peace.”
>
> Shuja Shafi, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, repeated Al-Qadri’s rejection of ISIS.
>
> “This attack is being claimed by the group calling themselves ‘Islamic State’,” he said. “There is nothing Islamic about such people and their actions are evil, and outside the boundaries set by our faith.”
>
> The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University, the thousand-year-old, highly influential center for Sunni Muslim scholarship, called the attacks “odious” and called on the world to “unite to face this monster,” according to French magazine Jeunea Frique.
>
> There is nothing Islamic about such people and their actions are evil, and outside the boundaries set by our faith.
>
> Leaders of several Muslim-majority nations also spoke out. Iranian president Hassan Rouhani called the attacks a “crime against humanity,” Qatari foreign minister Khaled al-Attiyah described them as “heinous,” and Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister declared they were “in violation and contravention of all ethics, morals and religions.” Saudi Arabia’s highest religious body also spoke out, saying “terrorists are not sanctioned by Islam and these acts are contrary to values of mercy it brought to the world.”
>
> Joko Widodo, president of Indonesia — the largest Muslim nation population-wise — said “Indonesia condemns the violence that took place in Paris.”
>
> In the United States, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim social justice group, quickly issued a press release rejecting terrorism — something they do regularly in response to such incidents. Their statement also made mention of a bombing in Beirut, Lebanon on Thursday that wounded 200 and killed 45. Three residents of Dearborn, Michigan lost their lives in that attack attack, which ISIS also claimed responsibility for.
>
> “These savage and despicable attacks on civilians, whether they occur in Paris, Beirut or any other city, are outrageous and without justification,” CAIR’s statement read. “We condemn these horrific crimes in the strongest terms possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of those killed and injured and with all of France. The perpetrators of these heinous attacks must be apprehended and brought to justice.”

Don’t expect your Islamophobic Facebookfriend to change his mind about this on the basis of mere factual evidence, though.

Which is of course something that could also be said for solidarity addresses made by you and me. Still there is a difference in whether these expressions of outrage are made or there is a “deafening silence” as some of the already deaf are claiming.
As for practical relevance: If a high ranking Islamic authority figure like the Grand Imam of al-Azhar calls the ISIS terrorists “monsters”, it may not mean much to you, but quite a few Sunni Muslims might be inclined to listen. And everyone who does helps.

What’s that got to do with it? The OP wasn’t asking for examples of practical action; they were asking precisely for “expressions of outrage” of a particular kind, to refute the assertion of an ignorant acquaintance that such expressions of outrage are not being stated.

Do I detect a whiff of moving the goalposts from _“why don’t the so-called moderate Muslims condemn these terrorist attacks”_ to _“why don’t the so-called moderate Muslims do more to prevent these terrorist attacks”_ here?

Politely worded phrases in English are nice. They make good window dressing when issued as a faceless press release to the NY Times.
But for me, the condemnations only count if they are in Arabic, and if they are published widely in the media where other Muslims will read them, and signed by individuals who are held in respect by other Muslims.
And if they are phrased not in vague generalities, but in technical language (such as a fatwa), quoting sharia law and promising punishments for the perpetrators.
For example, how about those 70 virgins waiting for the “martyrs”?—Have any madrassas or serious institutions of Muslim theology tried teaching tens of thousands of students that you only get laid in heaven if you haven’t murdered anybody?
Shiites and Sunites love to attack each other with explosive condemnations , declaring the other side to be infidels, deserving of death, etc. Do they put the same level of energy into condemnations of terrorism?\*
Those would be the quotes that offer the OP’s friend what he is looking for…

* * *

\*and please don’t respond to me with comparisons to western religous feuds. Sure, Baptists and Jehovah’s Witnessess spew fire-and-brimstone against Catholics and Unitarians…but they don’t bomb churches and coordinate organized terrorist attacks on innocent people. (Although they do ring your doorbell at 9:00 A.M on weekends and offer you a pamphlet, so maybe it’s all the same 🙂 ) .

All conditions not asked for, and added after the fact. If these conditions had been actually asked for and met, I’m sure you would have tacked on some more so that _they_ wouldn’t have counted, either.

Of course, the final “refutation” of any Muslim’s condemnation will be the tired out accusation of “Muslims are required to lie” BS. How long before that’s actually used seriously on this latest issue?

Did you read the examples cited in post #2? Do you imagine that just because they’re cited in translation in an English-language article, the pronouncements of, e.g., the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University and the Council of Senior Scholars of Saudi Arabia and high officials of Arabic-speaking countries have not been issued in Arabic? If you were given a [source to find them in Arabic](http://www.spa.gov.sa), would that be any use to you? (And you do realize that the condemnation from the President of Iran [is in Persian](http://www.mehrnews.com/news/2966125/%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%AD%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%AD%D9%85%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B1%DB%8C%D8%B3%D8%AA%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D9%81%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B3%D9%87-%D8%B1%D8%A7-%D8%B4%D8%AF%DB%8C%D8%AF%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%AD%DA%A9%D9%88%D9%85-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF), not Arabic, right?)

Linguistic issues aside, would you concede that [officially lighting the towers in Riyadh in the colors of the French flag as a gesture of solidarity with France](http://english.alarabiya.net/en/variety/2015/11/16/Iconic-Arab-monuments-lit-up-in-solidarity-with-Paris.html) is making a statement to local Muslims that can’t be dismissed as a mere “faceless press release” to foreign media?

Sheesh. It constantly amazes me how surprised and distrustful people can be about the unremarkable fact that Muslim nations and institutions officially condemn Islamist terrorism. The vast majority of them don’t like ISIS any more than we do, and with good reason.

Moving, moving the goal posts.

The Francophone media of the [francophone muslims](http://www.zamanfrance.fr/article/grandes-voix-monde-musulman-condamnent-odieuse-attaque-terroriste-18571.html)is full of the denunciation, but it is meaningless of course, nothing the muslims do is honest obviously, it is only for show…

>
> But for me, the condemnations only count if they are in Arabic, and if they are published widely in the media where other Muslims will read them, and signed by individuals who are held in respect by other Muslims.

And when the theologians send a long letter to the DAESH denouncing them in the theological terms this becomes nothing…

> [@](#):
>
> And if they are phrased not in vague generalities, but in technical language (such as a fatwa), quoting sharia law and promising punishments for the perpetrators.

Over a year ago this was done, by the leading scholars, denouncing in the harshest terms the DAESH, even it was later translated into the English… (it was even linked to here, but of course it becomes invisible, not fitting the narrative)

And still the phobics pretend nothing is done.

The idea that there is not denunciation in our languages, the Arabic or the French or whatever is utterly without a foundation and mere excuses and obfuscation.

Muslim groups like those cited in this thread, while expressing regret/outrage over the Paris attacks and/or the Charlie Hebdo murders, typically avoid specifically denouncing the organizations sponsoring terrorism.

For instance, CAIR’s statement does not say anything bad about Islamic State, which [fits in with its history](http://www.nationalreview.com/article/393614/cair-terror-group-daniel-pipes).

\*"CAIR incites, funds, and does much more vis-à-vis terrorism:

It apologizes for terrorist groups: Challenged repeatedly to denounce Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist groups, CAIR denounces the acts of violence but not their sponsors. It is connected to Hamas: Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and many other governments, indirectly created CAIR and the two groups remain tight.

Examples: In 1994, CAIR head Nihad Awad publicly declared his support for Hamas; the Holy Land Foundation (HLF), a Hamas front group, contributed $5,000 to CAIR; in turn, CAIR exploited the 9/11 attacks to raise money for HLF; and, this past August, demonstrators at a CAIR-sponsored rally in Florida proclaimed “We are Hamas!”

It settled a lawsuit: CAIR initiated a libel lawsuit in 2004 over five statements by a group called Anti-CAIR. But two years later, CAIR settled the suit with prejudice (meaning that it cannot be reopened), implicitly acknowledging the accuracy of Anti-CAIR’s assertions, which included: “CAIR is a terrorist supporting front organization that is partially funded by terrorists”; “CAIR . . . is supported by terrorist supporting individuals, groups and countries”; “CAIR has proven links to, and was founded by, Islamic terrorists”; and “CAIR actively supports terrorists and terrorist supporting groups and nations.” It includes individuals accused of terrorism: At least seven board members or staff at CAIR have been arrested, denied entry to the U.S., or were indicted on or pled guilty to (or were convicted of) terrorist charges: Siraj Wahhaj, Bassem Khafagi, Randall (“Ismail”) Royer, Ghassan Elashi, Rabih Haddad, Muthanna Al-Hanooti, and Nabil Sadoun.

It is in trouble with the law: Federal prosecutors in 2007 named CAIR (along with two other Islamic organizations) as “unindicted co-conspirators and/or joint venturers” in a criminal conspiracy to support Hamas financially. In 2008, the FBI ended contacts with CAIR because of concern about its continuing terrorist ties."\*
