Last semester, I sat on a grade-appeals board. The student was appealing a C and claimed he didn’t deserve that low a grade. The board was composed of the department chair, three professors, two undergrads (both of us had taken the same course from the same professor), and one grad student. We each got a packet of material the student submitted for consideration to review, then discussed it among ourselves.
What I learned from the experience is that, generally speaking, any student can appeal any grade, if the student thinks the grade was unfair. That doesn’t mean the grade has to be changed, or even will be changed. All the department or university is obligated to do is hear the appeal.
In the end, the student’s C stood, mainly because he didn’t submit any samples of work and didn’t bother to appear to the hearing.
