There’s another thread going on that comments on some of these issues. In it, I have condemned the use of a voter list that purported to exclude felons, but apparently had tens of thousands of African-Americans and only 61 Hispanics on it. I have condemned the enforcement of a rule requiring 80# bond paper for voter registrations, and the rejection of all registrations not complying with that rule, even though the rejected registrations were printed on paper approved by local elections boards.

However, I agree with the rules requiring that actual ex-felons be denied the vote (in such states as have that rule) and I agree that non-citizens should not be permitted to vote.

I’ll be happy to comment on - and condemn if warranted - any particular incident you wish to bring to my attention.

More pointedly, have you posted anything along the lines of, “Another PR hit for the responsibility, tough-on-crime political party. Man, that’s a shame”?

Because, after all, those incidents involve members of the Republican party. The incident here just consists of two assholes being jerks to one another. The one who was the bigger jerk (the shin-kicker) apologized for it; the one who was being the smaller jerk (the insult-wearer) is trying to parlay it into a national incident.

I don’t deny that there are hotheaded idiots who self-identify as liberals. I just don’t see a shin-kicking incident as remotely newsworthy.

If she’d shot him, sure. If two dozen hotheaded idiot liberals descend on a rightwing newspaper factory and beat up the editor, by all means we should hear about it. Hell, if some Democratic dumbass steals all the copies of a rightwing free weekly from the stands all over town, **that’s** news.

This is not.

For those who can’t understand the OP here’s a summary of what happened.

A college student was wearing a mildly offensive pro-Republican t-shirt. A teacher took offense to it and kicked him in the leg. The teacher has been charged with a misdemeanor. The teacher and the school have apologized to the student. The student says he plans to sue the school.

Some would say this was a minor incident and is mostly over with. Liberal seems to feel there was no sufficient backlash against the Democrats.

May I clarify?

**Some guy** was **showing off** a mildly offensive pro-Republican t-shirt **at a restaurant**. A **woman** took offense to it and kicked him in the leg. **Coincidentally, he was a student at the school where she was a part-time instructor**.

In other words, this has nothing at all to do with the university. If some guy at a bar gropes me, and later I find out that he and I work for the same company, I can’t sue the company for sexual harrassment.

No.

But frankly, actions like the voter questioning don’t exactly fly in the face of “responsibility” and “tough-on-crime” designations for the most part. If, for example, you allege voter intimidation because cops are placed outside polling places, the “responsibility” and “tough on crime” approach would be to shrug. After all, what have law-abiding folk to fear from the presence of police? If you allege that voters are being slowed by challenges to their legitimacy, the “responsibility” and “tough on crime” approach would be that each voter should shoulder through, demanding their right to cast provisional ballots and clear up the misunderstanding.

So actions that may intimidate, or discourage, voters, as long as they do not constitute an actual ban or insurmountable barrier, and as long as they are arguably legal, do not offend the “responsibility” and “tough on crime” mentality.

In contrast, when a party that preaches tolerance and acceptance has members that will kick a person for advertising a different view, that’s much more of a departure - much more in the realm of hypocriscy.

Honestly, this has nothing to do with the school, this had nothing to do with the democratic party. This has to do with 2 people who were being assholes-one who was openly goading a crowd of people in public, and one who wasn’t sufficiently strong enough to resist reacting.

Only small-minded pricks will associate this with the whole of either party, or even involve the school or the teacher’s standing as an instructor. I don’t indict the entire Republican party for his less-than-tasteful behavior, I don’t indict the entire Democratic party for the knee-jerk reactions of one person.

I do find it funny how both of them are acting like _people_ and as such are defying their stereotypes politically.

Apples and oranges, Rick: I was responding to your point that

These aren’t cases of voter intimidation; these are cases that are voter disenfranchisement, and sure look like they might be criminal voter disenfranchisement. Yet I’ve heard very little from the Republican party calling for a full investigation of these events, calling for vigorous prosecution of anyone committing a crime in connection with them.

THAT’s the hypocrisy I’m talking about.
