Marc, I knew what he was saying, and i get “wooshed” constantly around here!
Wasn’t there some flap a while back about the word niggardly?
That was in the Washington, D.C., municipal government some time in the mid-1990s. Someone overheard David Howard a white mayoral aide to Anthony Williams use the word “niggardly” in a private conversation and kicked up a fuss.
Can we get back to the important questions? What is the rejoinder to this?
In case some of you missed it, the link to the article in the OP is in post #153.
Upon rereading it, I am struck by this student’s colossal arrogance and nerve. She complains that she can’t get through college because she has set high moral standards for herself. Well, how in the blue bloody hell is that someone else’s problem? Who told her she had a divine right to be comfortable and unoffended for the duration of her life? I can’t even imagine going to a dept. head or dean to whine about something like this.
Just had a flashback to a human biology or something class in college… We had to watch a film about women giving birth in the squatting position. It was just as graphic as it sounds. My friend nearly passed out, so we escorted her outside to let her recover. Then she went on with the semester, never complained to the prof or admins about it.
So yes, there will be uncomfortable and distressing moments in college, but we can survive them–if we want to.
