I haven’t seen too much of his comedy, but I am definitely going to watch his roast on Comedy Central.

Ditto, though I’m not a big Leary fan. Roasts leave me in stitches even when the roastee - or even the roasters - aren’t people I’m really into.

Colin Quinn was 3rd banana on an MTV quiz show called “Remote Control.” The host was Ken Ober, who would occasionally let Colin make a sarcastic remark or two about the contestants. The one genuinely funny bit he did on the show was “Sing Along With Colin.” Colin would sing some pop song (as badly as you’d expect!), then stop… and a contestant would have to sing the next line.

That show also gave Adam Sandler (The Stud Boy, the Trivial Delinquent, et al) his fiorst big break in show biz.

Thank God Quinn wasn’t smart enough to join up with Tracy Morgan. Between the two of them, they’d be able to combine their forces and shroud the planet in Shadows of Unfunny for eternity. They’d be unstoppable. Leary, Seinfeld, Lewis Black, Jon Stewart? They’d lay their lifeless at the feet of the MorganQuinn moster, casualties of the Funny War- empty shells of The Way It Used To Be.

THANK YOU!! Jesus, can anybody explain how we went from an era in which Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, Jan Hooks, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Norm McDonald, etc, ruled the show, to the current pathetic cast and writing situation? In the aforementioned period, the show was hilarious, well written, had fantastic chemistry among the people…and now they have a group of people who are one note over the toppers who seem like they are trying too hard, replacing ability with zeal. Darrel Hammond is the only half decent one on that show that I can think of at the moment, and Chris Catan has some good skits and characterizations. The others have their moments on occasion, but over all are pretty piss poor.

I can’t understand it: this is a legendary show with picks of the greatest up and coming comic talent in existance…couldn’t they find anyone better? Have the pickins become that slim?

Sorry for the rant, but ya opened the Pandora’s Box. This has astounded me for ages. (-:

Well, for one thing, all of those people are gone (although I’ve never been a Sandler fan - but I guess you are if you listed him twice ;)). I hate Kattan too. I’m just sayin that because I enjoy it. I hate him hate him hate him. 🙂

Nobody stays on the show for very long these days; they spin off their characters into a movie as fast as possible. Then, 10 times out of 10, the movie tanks and some other loser has to be hired. Repeat _ad nauseam_ and you have at least part of the problem. (In my opinion, the fact that just about ALL the sketches are recurring characters has really hurt the show. Predictability - since nearly all recurring characters are one-dimensional - is the enemy of comedy, and this show in particular. Even worse, the characters aren’t funny.)

Evidently, they think these people ARE funny. Which is even scarier. I was watching a rerun from this past season with my parents (before anyone asks, there was nothing else on). My mom seemed even more annoyed at the crappiness than me. “We used to _stay home_ on Saturday nights!” she said. Just to watch this show. And now it’s got kind of a black hole of comedy thing going on. It actually made me sad.

Tracy Morgan is apparently shopping around a pilot for a sitcom where he is a father, how original. I figured he’d go to movies rather than sitcoms. Somehow I see him having a post-SNL TV career similar to Kevin Nealon, Dana Carvey, Tim Meadows, or Victoria Jackson. Crash and burn. But I’ve always hated him anyway, so I can’t be impartial.

How Jim Breuer keeps getting work amazes me. Joe Pesci, Goat Boy, and pot jokes - wow what a depth of material to draw on.

Chris Kattan left SNL at the same time as Tracy Morgan, let’s see how his career turns out. He’s already headed for Rob Schneider territory with stuff like _Corky Romano_.

But Colin Quinn, who I liked when I first saw him on _Remote Control_ before I found out that what he did there was all he was capable of, has been carried by so many other people for so long just because of the “comic’s comic” thing. Leary and that group must have “riders” in most of their contracts demanding Quinn get work or a development deal.

Even that era was at least one notch below the Golden Era of SNL, during the reign of John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, et. al. I blame the writers rather than the actors, though.

I’ve long held a casual theory that the show’s quality fluctuates with the quality and type of drugs the writers and cast are using, but that’s a controversial position and one I haven’t really researched fully.

What can I say? I know better, but I’ve become addicted to watching “Tough Crowd.” Yes, I know Colin Quinn isn’t funny, talented, articulate, and all that. But he seems so likeable. The kind of guy you might want to go have drinks with, or watch the game with. Not that I drink or watch sports, but it might be kind of fun to do so with him. He’s got that sweet puppy dog appeal. Although apparently his show would have no future if not for Kobe’s little shenanigans. God, that guy’s got to be praying that the media gets access to the trial and any documents.
