Have any fellow Dopers heard anything about President Hugo Chavez warning about a planned Colombian military attack against Venezuela? Could there be any truth in this to compel President Chavez to make this public statement? ---

I’ve been following the antics of El Presidente for a while. He doesn’t need truth to make public statements. He has a very vivid imagination, delusions of grandeur, and a very weak grip on reality. I’m not qualified to make this judgement, but I think he’s a nutcase. ---

My bet is he’s agitating to whip up support. Next he will adopt a system of color-coded alerts to tell the population that they’re at grave danger of some undefined external threat. ---

Film at eleven!” But I’ve got a feeling Chavez is a genuine nutcase, as opposed to exploiting fear for marketing purposes. ---

I doubt Colombia’s going to attack Venezuela, but Colombia’s been upset with Venezuela, because Venezuela has been giving support to FARC, a Colombian narco-terrorist group. ---

I can’t see it happenning. They have enough military problems with FARC and ELN to open a second front unless they have a six-days-war kind of attack. ---

Although… it’s odd that he’d be mentioning Colombia for a false attack threat when he’s got the old standby for such right here in the USA (being us, the USA). Of course, the CIA could be orchestrating the whole thing. Unlike so many Dopers, I wouldn’t be against such and would like to see the SOB try to run his country in such a manner. On the other hand, I’ve got commercial interests there that might suffer as a result. ☹ ---

My vote is he’s trying to build supprt. The Revolution needs enemies, be they real or imagined.
