I think Nazi Germany had one of the sharpest dressed militaries in modern history.

That’s because their uniforms were designed by Hugo Boss. Check it out if you don’t believe me.

It really does…I have a coffee table book entitled “The Wonderful World of Albert Kahn”, that has color pictures from all over the world from the very early years of the 20th century, and you get the very sensation that you’re describing…all of a sudden you feel like the subjects were actually live, breathing people.

Hitler said himself he couldn’t believe how the US goverment made American soldiers look so sloppy in their uniforms.

No cite, but probably from Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, IIRC.

I think this has more to do with the amount of time it takes to take a picture.

I believe the older cameras were not the “say cheese and click” cameras that we are now used to. You had to stay still for a long time when posing and no one would hold a smile for that long.

Interesting how you can tell some of the pics were from the early days of the Nazis by the uniforms. They’re all in brown and the uniforms are less, uh, uniform with a slight homemade look to them. In (chronologically) later images most everyone is in super crisp black tunics and trousers.

> I’m sure it is what the site implies it is, but without any context it _may_ have some legitimate (i.e. medical) reason for existence. I honestly doubt it wouldn’t be legitimate, but being true to truth (and to learn more about the practices) I’d like to see a cite.
>
> Honestly I just assumed their “medical testing” was done strapping someone down onto a board or metal table with rope.. Not the super clean sterile operating room look in that image. Interesting if there’s more context behind the legitimizing of the “research” done by dressing it all up as “medical testing”.

Without any other context information, I suspect that that is a shipboard medical facility. If the cabinet in the background is not warped, then both the floor and the ceiling are sloping downward from left to right. The exam/operating table is on a base that is higher on one side than the other, as is the cabinet in the background. The walls appear to be welded metal. The metal restraints would keep someone from rolling off the table if the deck was moving. The table has the leg supports for standard urological/perirectal surgical procedures. The whole thing looks like a standard operating room pre-1950’s, but in a strange location. The slanted ceiling and floor makes me think ‘ship’ rather than ‘bunker’ or ‘concentration camp’.

The cameras you are thinking about are from the 1880s, not the 1940s. I was actually quite impressed with shutter speeds they were achieved in some of the indoor photos. I guess those Life photogs didn’t have to scrimp on film.

Whilst it might be very comforting to peg the whole of WW2 and the Holocaust on Hitler, that is in fact utterly simplistic, naive and wrong.

The movies about Hitler never really make the Nazi symbols look as good as they do in the pictures.

I hate to give them any credit for anything, but their marketing borders the level of brilliance.

You’re not far from the truth there…I’ve seen scans from period magazines or fliers advertising all sorts of swastika stuff – balcony banners, banners to hang from a window, sashes, wall hangings, etc.

I don’t know, and I couldn’t figure out what the pic of the naked chick was doing in there. Then I realized: her pubic hair is in the same shape as that prominent “comb-over” guy’s mustache.

[tangent] So I was looking for something else—how many states had a state “pledge of allegiance” and I stumbled across the Bellamy salute. It looks pretty close to the Nazi salute.

- Among the anti-interventionist Americans was aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh. Supporters of Lindbergh’s views would claim that Lindbergh did not support Adolf Hitler, and that pictures of him appearing to do the Nazi salute were actually pictures of him using the Bellamy salute.[1]\*

Upham as the gesture that was to accompany the Pledge of Allegiance of the United States of America, whose text had been written by Francis Bellamy, it was known as the flag salute during the period when it was used, from 1892 to 1942, with the Pledge of Allegiance. Bellamy promoted the salute and thus it was retroactively renamed after him.

It is valuable to see it in color, precisely so we don’t just consign it to some earlier parallel universe (the Volkswagens are also a good anchor to the reality of it, oddly). The unspeakable was abetted while waving around cheap decorative paraphernalia.

(BTW, Himmler in a helmet looks absolutely like the guy the SS would _reject_ before he walked in the door.)

[This one](http://www.fuckthemeat.com/foto2/naziincolor/55.jpg), to the modern eye would look like Hitler’s saying “izzat YOUR obnoxious ringtone?” to the nazi on his left, who’s desperately trying to mute it.

You have to be really tough and confident to march behind [this standard](http://www.fuckthemeat.com/foto2/naziincolor1/59.jpg). Or just nuts. No wonder he’s hiding his face.
