We’ve had plenty of ‘What’s in your CD Player’ and ‘Music Poll’ threads here in the past. I figured it was about time we had a little comparison thread where posters list 9 songs in order they played in shuffle mode from their computer jukebox or portable mp3 player.

Requirements to play:
[li]Ability to post to the SDMB [/li][li]An Portable mp3 Player or Computer Jukebox program that plays audio files on shuttle mode[/li][li]A few minutes free time
[/li]Rules of the game:[ol][li]With your player in shuffle mode, start at the top of your main (all songs) library – not a specific playlist.[/li][li]For iPod users: Confirm you’re in Shuffle Mode in Settings and hit ‘Play’ on the 1st track to come up on your song list.[/li][li]Type in the Track Title & Artist for each song that plays to the reply box in this thread.[/li][li]After you’ve listed the 9th track, post them to this thread.[/ol][/li]Extra Credit: (Just for comparison purposes) Write down the # of tracks on your player or in your library.

You may ask: ‘_Why list 9 tracks instead of 5, or 10, or 25_?’ I don’t know, maybe cuz it was John Lennon’s favorite number. Or maybe cuz Miles Drentell’s line “Why this need to ‘decimalize’ everything?” has been stuck in my head for the last 14 years. I guess I picked 9 tracks because it’s quick, easy and just about the right quantity to get a very general view of what kind of tracks are in your player.

I figure it will be an interesting to see what randomly comes up on other people’s players. These digital segues that come out of thin air are one of those little quirks I like about the digital age.

Even if I could recall the laws of probability from college days, I don’t believe it would be possible to calculate the odds that 2 posters will have a matching track from their list – The odds of such an event would be astronomical.

By the way: For those of you who wanna play along, don’t fudge the results. If a track that you don’t want anyone to know you have on your player comes up, don’t be embarrassed to include it. I’ve had segues like _Run Joey Run =\> Sweet Loaf =\> All Sides Now =\> Fuck You =\> Singing The Blues =\> Deutschland Has Gotta Die_ come up and they’re almost always enjoyable to list to.

So, if you’ve got a moment, post em up – and let’s see what happens. Here I go:

**4,130 songs** (Device: iPod)[ul]
[li]1/4130: _Hash Pipe_ – **Weezer** [/li][li]2/4130: _Keep On Running_ – **Spencer Davis Group** [/li][li]3/4130: _Born To Run(ny Eggs)_ – **Bottom Line All Stars** [/li][li]4/4130: _Pretend We’re Dead_ – **L7** [/li][li]5/4130: _I’m Just A Singer (In a Rock & Roll Band)_ – **Moody Blues** [/li][li]6/4130: _Church Bells May Ring_ – **The Willows** [/li][li]7/4130: _Warped_ – **Red Hot Chili Peppers** [/li][li]8/4130: _You Need Love_ – **Muddy Waters** [/li][li]9/4130: _Judy Is A Dick Slap_ – **Belle & Sebastian** [/ul][/li]That just scratched the surface…but it was the 1st nine tracks.

Your turn…

6. Pink Victim - Combustible Edison

9. Higher Plane - Hunters and Collectors

This mix is altogether too normal and has too many repeated bands. I will try again shortly.

A measly 507 songs. Can’t wait until I buy a new CD drive, then I can start ripping my 200+ CDs.

466 songs total ('course, I don’t keep all my music on my computer).

1. Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors - Radiohead
2. In Limbo - Radiohead
3. Mothers Talk (US Remix) - Tears For Fears
4. To Be Alive - Mesh
5. Broken Revisited - Tears For Fears
6. On The Run - Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop OST #3)
7. Confined - Mesh
8. Backdrifts - Radiohead
9. Quiet Ones - Tears For Fears

Not entirely representative, but all my favorites did get in there twice.

iTunes - 4078 songs

1. Do It Again - Queens of the Stone Age
2. Let’s Rock - Smash Mouth
3. Flight 505 - The Rolling Stones
4. Sister Ray - Velvet Underground
5. Jacob Marley’s Chain - Aimee Mann
6. Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
7. Then the Morning Comes - Smash Mouth
8. Bubbles - Bush
9. Taste of Cindy - Jesus and Mary Chain

Not terribly representative of my musical taste, although at least Amiee Mann got in there. And what’s with the two Smash Mouth songs? I seriously question the randomness of iTunes.

iTunes, 1112 songs

1. _Wait_ - The Beatles
2. _Made Up My Mind_ - David Gray
3. _Lost In Love_ - Air Supply
4. _Another Night_ - Real McCoy
5. _Longer_ - Dan Fogelberg
6. _Snow on the Sahara_ - Anggun
7. _Laura_ - Billy Joel
8. _Reminiscing_ - Little River Band
9. _In The House of Stone and Light_ - Martin Page

Gee, can you tell that I’m a chick? 😉

That second tune is from one of a bunch of old compilation CDs that I’ve never listened to all the way through…this was my first time hearing the song, and I might well have gone the rest of my life without hearing it were it not for this thread. That’s kinda cool. 🆒 I’m gonna let it keep playing, because now I’m curious about what will come up next…

iPod, 3648 songs

1. Flat Lay The Water – The Sea and Cake
2. Stone on the Water – Badly Drawn Boy
3. Your Baby – Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham
4. California One Youth and Beauty Brigade – The Decemberists
5. Long Knives – Rainer Maria
6. Here Comes the Flood – Peter Gabriel
7. My Iron Lung – Radiohead
8. Rock Lobster – The B-52s
9. Punjab de Rang – Dhol Foundation

That was a pretty good listening spell actually (although misrepresentative because at least 1/4 of my songs on the iPod are rap/hip-hop and another bunch are Stereolab, Pavement, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones)

Attempt #2:

1. Yoda - Weird Al Yankovic
2. Long Way to the Water - Hunters & Collectors
3. Prime Time TV - Basia
4. Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) - US3
5. Eurochild - Massive Attack
6. Drive - R.E.M.
7. Cool River - Paul Simon
8. Scream Who - Hunters & Collectors
9. How Can I Sing Like a Girl? - TMBG

Over my two attempts, Paul Simon is way over-represented, and Broadcast, Stereolab, and Cocteau Twins are very under-represented.

Jukebox Multimedia - 655 songs.

This is not - Static-X
Meltdown - Clint Mansell
Marquee Moon - Television
The Soldering Life - The Decemberists
New Killer Star - David Bowie
Haunt of the Roulette Dares - The Mars Volta
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Bottle Of Smoke - Pogues
Quadrophenia (Entire Album) - The Who

(I didn’t actually sit through Quadrophenia)

Winamp, 350 songs

221: Camr’on - Oh Boy
316: Barenaked Ladies - Another Postcard
225: Tony Orlando and Dawn - Up on the Roof
15: Arrogant Worms - Canada is Really Big
133: Paula Abdul - Straight Up
152: Same Cooke - Working in a Coal Mine
207: Wise Guys - Start the Commotion
98: Hideki Naganuma - Jet Set Medly (from Jet Set Radio, on Dreamcast)
142: Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe

Fairly ecclectic, and there are still entire genres completely unrepresented in that list. Although, for the record, I never actually listen to “Oh Boy.” I just keep forgetting to delete it…

iTunes, a total of 714 musical pieces. (I don’t have all that many “songs.”)

1. “Far From Heaven” theme by Elmer Bernstein
2. “Is There Something I Should Know” by Duran Duran
3. “Blue Monkey” from “Looney Tunes: Back in Action” soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith
4. “Flaming Link” from “Link” soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith
5. “Gone in 60 Seconds” theme by Trevor Jones
6. “Rio Conchos” theme soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith
7. Etude in C minor by Bela Fleck (I think it’s a piece by Chopin but I am too lazy to confirm)
8. Track 16 (too lazy to find name) from “Magic” soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith
9. “End Title” from the soundtrack “The Man From Snowy River” by Bruce Rowland

I do have tons of Jerry Goldsmith in my iTunes playlist (and will be adding more, since I am now grieving his recent passing), but it’s just a coincidence that this particular random selection has so many.

WMP, 2440 items

1. _The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway_ - Genesis
2. _No Self Control_ - Peter Gabriel (one of my favorite songs, ever. Odd that two different Peter Gabriel compositions came up back-to-back)
3. _The Gunfighter_ - Blues Traveler
4. _Love Me Like a Man_ - Diana Krall
5. _Run Run Run_ - The Who
6. _Sun is Shining_ - Bob Marley
7. _Funk #49_ - Joe Walsh (with the James Gang)
8. _Is this Love_ - Bob Marley & the Wailers (2 Bob Marley songs. Hm. that’s kinda weird too.)
9. _Ebony Eyes_ - Stevie Wonder

I can’t wait to be able to do this in my car… 🙂

1. Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) - C+C Music Factory
2. Riding For The Moon - Alex Ekian/_Super Burnout_
3. Senorita (Speedy Mix) - Jenny Rom/_Dance Dance Revolution Extreme_
4. Transformation - Vince DiCola/_Transformers: The Movie_
5. Someday We’ll Be Together - Diana Ross & The Supremes
6. The Confessional - George Carlin

Try #2 for me as well, still on iTunes with 1124 songs:

1. _History Repeating_ - Propellerheads
2. _Trashin’ The Camp_ - Phil Collins & 'N Sync
3. _Kiss_ - Prince
4. _The Lees of Old Virginia_ - 1776 Original Broadway Cast
5. _Smash_ - Q
6. _Can’t Buy Me Love_ - The Beatles
7. _Part of the Plan_ - Dan Fogelberg
8. _You’re a Grand Old Flag_ - my mom
9. _Crackdown_ - Grant Lee Buffalo

Less ‘lite rock’ this time (though Dan Fogelberg is way overrepresented), but you can still tell that I’m a chick. I give up. 😉

6703 tracks, with Winamp on “fast morph” shuffle (greatest randomness factor):

1. George Clinton - Greatest Funkin’ Hits [06] - Mothership Connection Starchild (Fully Equipped mix)
2. Kingdom Hearts Original Soundtrack (Disc 2) [23] - HIKARI -KINGDOM HEARTS Instrumental Version-
3. Bim Skala Bim - How’s It Goin’ [10] - Diggin’ A Hole
4. Exile - Your Eyes Only (English version) (Jpop)
5. Metallica - Enter the Sandman (How bizzare; I didn’t have any other Metallica, and didn’t know I had this track)
6. Kuraki Mai - Delicious Way [09] - Everything’s All Right
7. (Outlaw Star soundtrack) arai akino - hiru no tsuki
8. System Of A Down - Steal This Album [15] - Roulette
9. Inaba Koushi - Kokorozashi Iori [03] - Touch (vocalist from B’z)

Classic rock is underrepresented, especially considering I have ever Led Zeppelin album. Ah well, intersting, if eclectic, selection.
