I don’t really care about Weird Al, Flight of the Conchordes, TMBG, or other comedy rock groups, but love The D (who I saw nine days ago, at Bonnaroo. They were amazing) and The Lonely Island to ridiculous degrees. I can’t find any other artists or groups I’d group with their over the top and slightly sophomoric humor, though. Anyone else have any suggestions?

You might like Pintsize.
Humorous Heavy Metal: Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big played guitar, although he used a pseudonym, as does everyone in the band, and this project is not listed on his Wiki page. Although he plays on the recordings I’m linking to, he’s no longer in the band and even the pseudonym he used has been taken off the “Band Members” list on the MySpace page.

At the MySpace link, listen to “Say Yes to Drugs”. This is probably the greatest drug anthem ever.

And for what it’s worth . . . I, myself, do Comedy Music. Although, stylistically I don’t really match what you’ve asked for.

Hmmm… try The Dead Milkmen. They’re defunct but they have reams of funny music. They’re punk not rock like the D. But hilarious.

Albany, NY’s Blotto has been spoofing various genres for like 30 years now. Check out [Metal Head](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyJSetm6U0k), [I Quit](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2TZyILPUk8) and of the crowd and karaoke pleaser [I Wanna Be A Lifeguard](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBRJ6jQfap0).

Terrific musicianship, great songwriting, excellent lyrics that are both mocking and tributary, and hooks for days.

Stephen Lynch is worth a look. His stuff is a little too “frat humor” for my tastes, but there’s some laughs to be had.

She sings a variety of songs, all the way from light-hearted to downright grim, but Tori Amos can throw in a giggler now and then.

Her “I Want to Kill This Waitress” cracks me up everytime.

The [Arrogant Worms](http://www.arrogantworms.com/). They’re Canadian, and some of their stuff is understandable only to Canadians, but most of it would be funny to anyone. Song samples are available on their website, and I’ve found them before on Youtube.

[The Bonzo Dog Band](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonzo_Dog_Doo-Dah_Band), for the best comic rock music ever recorded.

Spike Jones and his City Slickers are great, though not rock.

There’s also Martin Mull (he’s known as an actor now, but he did some incredibly funny work on his first couple of albums).

I agree with Blotto, but they’re not doing new songs any more. Their old stuff is still great, though.

Check out the Adult Swim show Metalocalypse if you’re into metal at all…the music is great and the songs are funny. I’ve heard lots of punk bands with an affinity for over the top sophomoric humor – maybe The Dickies, The Vandals, or the Descendants?

If you’d like a folky approach… Garfunkel & Oates are pretty dang hilarious.

You might recognize Oates (Kate Micucci) from her stint as the Ukelele player on Scrubs.

Great stuff, but I don’t think that’s what the OP is looking for.

To use an analogy, he’s looking for Andrew Dice Clay, and you’re suggesting Woody Allen.

I’m not as familiar with either Tenacious D or The Lonely Island as I ought to be, so I don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, but when I think of sophomoric, over the top rock, I think of The Darkness, of Trip Shakespeare’s song “[Toolmaster](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jfS56dtHzQ) (of Brainerd),” and, of course, the [Tap](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinal_Tap_(band))!

Thanks, everyone. I’ll check the artists out that I’m not familiar with.

I love Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Nellie McKay, et al. Female singer songwriters are my favorite broad genre of music, and if they have a quirky sense of humor that shows in their songs, all the better. I don’t think I’d put them in the same category as Jack Black or Andy Samberg, though.

GWAR is \*too \*over the top and sophomoric. They actually played the same Bonnaroo that Tenacious D did, but I skipped on them. Generally speaking, the more gimmicky an artist, the less interested in them I am.

If you want a rockabilly vibe, there’s always the excellent **New Duncan Imperials**. Check out a live acoustic version of [Running With A Fork In My Mouth](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0qzZIrX0BY) or this video I just made for [I’m Schizophrenic (No I’m Not)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7ldaLdLey0).

> NDI are a great mix of raunchy rockabilly, sleazy drunken bar moments captured in musical interludes that are equally sleazy and drunken sounding, and a good damned sense of humor. Don’t be fooled into thinking NDI are just fooling around, tho. These guys are ace musicians and have serious songwriting chops as well. Put that together with an energy that recalls the best moments of Joe “King” Carrasco and the more party-oriented stuff from Zeke, and you have a band that consistently cranks out quirky clever, fun songs full of hooks that stick in your head long after the stereo is turned off.

You might also recognize them from the dinner I had with them this past Thursday night here in Chicago after their Comedy Death Ray show. Oh wait… maybe that hasn’t made national news yet. 🙂

I was actually coming into this thread to suggest them. They’re more folky but they can be pretty raunchy w/ the comedy.

I really did have dinner w/ them the other night (my wife and I were lucky enough to win the chance to do so) and they were absolute sweethearts.

Well, you can give Corky and the Juice Pigs a try. If you can find their albums, that is; I have **Pants** on CD, but can’t find their first one. Tenacious D has covered a song or two of theirs.
