Comic book characters who...play tabletop RPGs?

Wormy played wargames, though: he wandered up to see Ace the cyclops one time and found him DMing for Hambone the wink-dog and Fred the stonedrake, but while he was mildly curious to see what was going on he didn’t seem to really get the idea.

It’ll be somewhere on that site you linked to, but I haven’t the time to archive-binge my way through it right now, and I got nowhere on a random dip or two.

ETA: As I remember, the players were having to stay one step ahead of a collection of wandering monsters that numbered “a lumbering lurcher, a creeping heap, and a party of giant grub-bugs”.

And here we are. “Expanded Grottos and Goblins”, a nice play on AD&D and Gygax’s initials.

…this is the first I’ve heard of this theory, and I already consider it to be true.

Gamora’s either Captain America or Black Widow, Star Lord can only be Iron Man’s character (or possibly Fury’s), Groot’s the Hulk and Thor is Drax. But who’s playing Rocket Raccoon ? And who’s DMing ?

Cap’s the GM. Hawkeye is Rocket - sure, the personality doesn’t really match up, but that’s because Hawkeye is a really, really good roleplayer.

He’s been pretending to be an Avenger for years.

Some years back they had the “rocks fall and everyone dies” episode, too.

My theory:

Star-Lord: Steve Rogers. When asked to roll a character, went back to his youth and built a Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon pastiche.

Gamora: Natasha. Went for a Mary Sue.

Drax: Thor. He’s all about the combat, anyway, so he built an uncomplicated brawler.

Rocket: Tony Stark. He’s the consummate min-maxer, and a bit of a troll; thus, he made a ridiculous character who is both very annoying and very useful to the party. Also, he likes to play the technical guy.

Groot: Bruce Banner. Didn’t really want to play, and isn’t paying attention. Whenever someone tries to get him involved, he just looks up from his reading and repeats his character’s catchphrase. Does whatever Tony tells him.

DM: Nick Fury. Obviously.

Barton couldn’t find a babysitter.

Also, Steve Rogers has been catching up on popular music, and has finally reached the 1970’s. There’s some songs he liked that he’d like to play for the party.

I figure Barton was Yondu, who does after all fight using an arrow.

There’s a comic book that depicts Mickey, Donald and Goofy playing a tabletop RPG. It’s pretty great.

I believe I read in an interview somewhere that that story came to Mike Grell in a pepperoni-pizza-induced nightmare.

The Order of the Stick have been portrayed as playing a RPG in one of the guest strips.

Not just in a guest strip. Roy and his dad played a 1st Edition D&D campaign in Heaven to honor the arrival of Gary Gygax.
