It could depend on where you were at the time. I watched it here in the central time zone of the US and it was well after dark.

Landing was at 3:17 pm CDT. Armstrong’s first step on the moon was at 9:56 pm.

Actually, now I’m quite sure I conflated that memory with one of the other landings that we did watch in school. No idea where I was for Armstrong’s one small step.
