Jack Nicholson is a skeevy old fart and a bad actor, to boot. Sean Connery never _was_ sexy and went downhill after he started wearing loose false teeth. Steven Colbert was tolerable on the Daily Show but didn’t deserve his own show. He thinks he’s funnier than he really is. Neither Jim Carey or Will Smith are that good in comic roles, but both are breathtaking in serious roles. ---

_No Country For Old Men_ was a pretentious and overrated movie that people fell all over to praise because I don’t think they realized they were being condescended to. [spoiler]I swear, if I read one more post that says, “Oh, you didn’t get it? Moss wasn’t the protagonist. Gotcha!”… I don’t know how you define “protagonist,” but no matter what you or McCarthy say, Moss was a protagonist of that movie, and killing him offhandedly was dishonest, contrived, and fucking irritating. I know it was supposed to make a point. Yes, I got the point. I just didn’t like it. Javier Bardem did a good job of playing a cartoon character, which is how that role was written. As such, he was creepy as hell. But to read Chigurh as anything other than an archetype from an allegory simply does not work. It undermines the credibilty of the movie to try to accommodate gritty reality and egregiously unrealistic walking metaphors in one movie… or at least, it does in this particular movie. Whenever I hear someone praise this movie to the skies, I think that person has been hoodwinked by their own hipness. Or something. The Coens are best when they are doing comedy. I wish they’d go back to that and leave the pseudo-deep crap (which is how I think of McCarthy in general) to someone else.[/spoiler] ---

Hey, what’s the policy on spoilers for this thread? Because I think **Rubystreak** just dropped a pretty big one for a movie I haven’t seen yet, but have been looking to catch on DVD. ---

If you’re nasty as a young adult, you’ll likely be nasty as a senior citizen. You deserve nothing special for just surviving on this Earth for X number of decades. My husband has one that he gets away with more here than he probably would in the US - he thinks your President Kennedy was one of the five worst presidents ever. He also thinks it’s entirely possible the CIA had him whacked. 🙂 ---

A lot of blues music is utter shite. Simplistic, derivative and utterly repetitive. Really, not that great at all and I’ve heard some of the best of it in Chicago. Ditto on Opera. The plots are utterly stupid and often times the singing is just painful. ---

I don’t think he believes the CIA theory, but he’s told me several times that Kennedy was the worst. President. Ever. because of the Bay of Pigs and starting the Vietnam War. ---

I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned before but I’m aiming at the sacred cow that is Bruce Springsteen. I can’t stand his “singing” and his songs make me cringe. I will never understand the hype. ---

I like and follow sports, but the Olympics are Boring, and are now about as relevant as the Miss America pageant. Jon Stewart can be funny, but what a smug, pompous jerk. Self described Foodies. Jeeze. It’s a meal, not sex, not religion, not the afterlife. And speaking the food. I don’t know about your town, but not all local, neighborhood restaurants are to die for. Many times a chain serves better food. ---
