Holy shit, has anyone watched this show? It’s amazingly unfunny - so bad that I feel like I’m on Candid Camera when it comes on TV. Is someone really being paid to create this show?

The characters are ridiculous, the dialogue is sub-_Coach_ in its insipidness, and the situations seem to have been contrived by a lobotomized chimpanzee. The recent episode that I saw was entirely predicated on the idea that a Jewish character accidentally took a communion wafer from the priest at a Catholic funeral - and **had** to somehow get it back to the priest without the priest finding out. What? Communion wafers are only a symbolic thing; they’re not individually held with reverence as religious relics or something. Even a die-hard Catholic would happily toss it in the garbage if they ended up in the situation. Did I mention that this character is Jewish, so _he shouldn’t care in the first place_?

I like it. I think it’s one of the more refreshing show on TV.

Sure, the plots aren’t realistic at all, but nor were most of the good sitcoms I can think of. Seinfeld? Third Rock from the Sun? Fraiser? The list goes on.

Humor is obviously subjective, and as such, I really enjoy the show.

I think you’re mistaken on Catholic doctrine. My understanding is that devout Catholics believe that the wafer is actually transubstantiated into the literal body of Christ - and as such are very sacred relics.

You’re wrong about Catholicism, but you’re right about this show. It is painfully, painfully not funny. Even worse than NBC’s version of Coupling, which was the one of the few shows where felt so sorry for the actors I wanted to give them a hug.

I really like this show but if you didn’t see the first one then you are so lost premise-wise that the jokes don’t work. I predicted it’s failure at the very beginning for exactly this reason.

I respectfully disagree. Coupling was, IIRC, as close to unwatchable as I’ve ever judged a comedy - and I can watch predictable, formulaic sitcoms and still be entertained by them. Committed isn’t Seinfeld, or Scrubs, or Arrested Development, or whatever…but I’ve seen significantly worse.

It has its moments. It is quirky and fun at times. But I agree that the plot you are describing was inane. Still, least funny? Surely you haven’t seen Everybody Loves Raymond then.

I didn’t see the first episode, what is the premise that sets up all the jokes for the show?

But that’s only after it is eaten, right? Before it’s eaten it’s just a cracker.

I’'m not Catholic, so I may be wrong and corrections are very welcome.

I had seen commecials for the show for a while, and finally last Tuesday, after Scrubs, I decided I’d just sit and watch some. Man, that was a mistake. The episode I saw revolved around some guy going to eat a $29 burger. Fine. I remembered the cute girl from the east coast who ate the 10 lb hamburger and thought, “Hmm… this could be humorous.” Holy crap, in the 15 minutes I saw, they never made it to the burger place. Instead everything came about from some guy trying to impress some girl, but getting held up by a homeless guy at an ATM. It was so painfully unfunny that I’m still in the humour hole.
Regarding the Catholic thing, I believe that as soon as the Priest does the ceremony, the bread then becomes the literal body of Christ, not when it’s eaten.

So isn’t that just a remake of the Seinfeld episode where George has to return the marble rye without getting caught? But even more farfetched?
If I remember the book Dracula correctly, a communion wafer is a good thing to have for sealing out vampires. So I would have hung on to it and put it in my “In Case of SuperNatural Emergencies, Break Glass” kit.

> According to the traditional teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, the presence of Jesus in the sacrament of Communion. Through transubstantiation, the bread and wine consumed by worshipers become the body and blood of Jesus when a priest, acting on Jesus’ behalf, speaks the words “This is my body” and “This is my blood” over them.

It’s just a wafer.

There’s a tremendous amount of hate for this show out here on the Internets, and, being a generally discerning, good-taste kind of TV viewer, I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I like it. Sure, the story lines are contrived and unrealistic. But that ain’t the point.

It is, however, better than that Miami thing that was on for a while, or some of the other horrible sitcoms that NBC tried to put between Friends and Will & Grace.

But yes, it’s awful. The dialogue is awful. The acting is awful. I notice the laugh track (I usually don’t notice laugh tracks, not even on some of the worst offender shows. But here, I noticed. and it hurt). I tried to sit through one episode - (she had made up a fake boyfriend at work). And while it is standard sitcom fare, while watching it I thought that it could have been funny if anyone with any talent whatsoever had been even marginally involved in the process.
But instead it was this cast and those horrible writers and it was just really, really bad.
I couldn’t even make the whole half hour. Usually, I’ll just never turn a show on again. Or play it in the background while I’m doing something else. But this I turned off.

I’ve watched it a few times, and this is definitely the worst episode. That homeless guy thing was really not funny. The other episodes I’ve seen have been okay (way better than “Yes Dear” or most other sitcoms. I think it has potential. Or it could get worse.

Holy crap, I’ve been reading this board at work for years and this is the first time I’ve exclaimed WHAT?!? in response to something. [I think I may have startled our receptionist!] Whoa, Nelly. Did the person receive the host in the context of Communion or what? “toss it in the garbage”?? OMG no! \<mighty shudder and cringe, I can’t even imagine such a thing\> A diehard Catholic would consume the host of course, as it is the body and blood of Christ.

Absolutely the consecrated host and wine are revered; there are even ceremonies processing through church with the host. Years ago I was at church and the priest announced that a host had been found on the floor by the person cleaning up and that sent a shudder through the crowd.

That being said, if it was before consecration I’m not sure how he would have been given a wafer so that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
