Wow I bowed out too soon in this thread.

I may have misremembered things but I see that others thought the same way as I did.

So \*that \* would be why they sent a platoon of armed Space Marines instead of an electronics technician? Not buyin’ it, sorry.

From the IMDB quotes page, bolding added:

> Gorman: All we know is that there is still is no contact with the colony, and that \*\*a xenomorph may be involved. \*\*
> Frost: Excuse me sir, a what?
> Gorman: A xenomorph.
> Hicks: It’s a bughunt.

But there is so much going on thematically in _A.I._ that it should be fairly clear that it’s advanced mechas, rather than aliens – because aliens don’t fit.

When they’re outside the church, Gigolo Joe explains “The ones who made us are always looking for the ones who made _them_.” – So when David and Teddy are discovered by beings who are thrilled to find creatures who lived before the ice age wiped human beings out, and who explain that they feel that human beings are the key to the meaning of life, it shouldn’t be too hard to see the parallel.

> Perhaps the first use of _bug_ in relation to computers, but the term was use during Thomas Edison’s life to mean an industrial defect. And in any case, it was not she who either found the moth or preserved it; she just loved to tell the story and was always careful to emphasise that she herself had not been present. The whole reason the actual moth in question was kept and noted was that here was a routinely used term happening literally for once. However the incident did coin the term _debugging_. I mentioned all this back on the first page of the thread. Another common misconception. 😃

I’ve alread said that the robot explanation is the correct onme and makes sense. But I maintain that it’s still not necessarily obvious. Most moviemakers aren’t that consistent. Even Spielberg.

The first “Thin Man” movie. But to say more might be spoiling.
