The one good thing about getting old is that, over the years, you accumulate everything you need. Either that, or you decided you don’t need the things you don’t have. I don’t have, or need, a dishwasher. ---

No TV No games console No iron or ironing board No A/C or dishwasher (not that common in the UK anyway) No lawn mower (no grass in the back, the neighbour does the tiny bit in the front when he does his) No blender No ice cube trays No pets No plants No rent or mortgage ---

If we have an ironing board or iron, I don’t know where it is. I wouldn’t know what to do with it, anyway. If I want something that needs ironing cleaned, I take it to the dry cleaners. The vast majority of the clothes Mr. Neville and I have (and all the clothes I would wear by choice) are things like polos, knit pants, and T-shirts that don’t require ironing. Butter dish. We almost never have butter at the table- if we use it, it’s in a recipe. No game consoles, though we do have games on our PCs. We still haven’t replaced our blender that died a few years ago. We so rarely used it for anything that the food processor or a stick blender couldn’t do just as well. No houseplants except when I bring home a little box of pet grass or catnip for the cats. I say I don’t want houseplants because of the cats- the truth is, I’d rather have plants outside where the weather takes care of watering them. No credit card, student loan, car loan, or home-equity loan debt. Our only debt is our mortgage, and I’d like to keep it that way if at all possible. ---

No coffee pot, no toaster, no houseplants (the cats would eat them), no TV anywhere but the living room. And as of tomorrow, no cable box! (It broke a few months ago and I didn’t get around to taking it to the office to trade it in. We finally realized that we only miss the clock.) ---

No microwave – I own one, but our kitchen is really too small to store it, and we haven’t missed it at all. We use the kettle to boil water, and heat up leftovers in a pan or pot or take them for lunch and use the office microwave. Our vacuum cleaner is on its last legs, due to sucking up massive amounts of dog hair, so I suspect we’ll shortly be vacuum-free (only temporarily!). I could live without the dishwasher – I don’t mind doing the dishes by hand, but my husband would probably pitch a fit. I’ve never met anyone who dislikes dishes more than him.
