Not the same thing. The cricket World Cup has been held in India before. The stadia already exist, and for the eight or so teams that participate, at different venues, hotel rooms are sufficient. No villages are required.

I’ve been following the BBC fairly closely on this one and I do have to say it’s not looking good, and the word is that it’s not just the usual “Pre-Prestige International Sporting Event Media Beat-Up Hysteria” but that there really are problems- apparently they’ve known the Commonwealth Games were coming since 2003 or so but didn’t really start doing anything until 2008 or thereabouts.
I don’t think they’ll call it off at this point- too many people have too much invested in it, including all the various broadcasters- but sadly it doesn’t look like it’s going to be India’s Crowning Moment Of Awesome either.

A week to go and the government has used a cattle prod on The Proper Authorities. They might get the buildings up and running. We can only hope that no dreaded diseases ruin everything.
I bet they blame all this on being a democracy. After all, the Olympics being a success is a sure sign of dictatorship.

This line made me chuckle. When I was in India last November, every time I would comment on some issue or question something (storefronts blocking streets, people completely ignoring any traffic rules) the response from a local guild was always some variation on “in a Democracy, anything is possible”.
I couldn’t help but think that they hadn’t quite figured the whole thing out yet…

I was in Delhi in June, and it seemed like the whole city was under construction. I have no experience in construction, but I am pretty certain that monsoon rains are going to essentially stop any sort of major concrete or roadwork. IMHO, everything needed to be basically finished before the monsoon if they wanted to be ready for the games. It’s pretty obvious that this is a disaster in the making, and it’s pretty obvious that India isn’t capable of hosting an event like this.

Apparently the city has [decided](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/29/AR2010092900699.html) that to keep small monkeys away, it’s going to release large monkeys.
This reminds me of Brooklyn’s recent [plan](http://gothamist.com/2010/09/19/brooklyn_overrun_by_rat-eradicating.php) to control rats by releasing opossums. Didn’t work out well, unless you’re a possum. Or a rat.
(Kidding aside, I assume that the large monkeys will be on leashes, but it still sounds amusing).
