Complaint about a warning

It’s a curious sort of indifference that requires thousands upon thousands of typed words over a period of months to adequately express.

Well you see, there’s been a MAJOR problem getting people to understand what I’ve said and the positions I’ve taken.

However, and not to play junior mod or anything but I have to be sensitive to these things, I fear we are veering outside the purpose of ATMB and Colibri’s moderating in regard to this thread, are we not?

I don’t care what people make of what I’ve said or the positions I’ve taken. I don’t want them getting away with lies and vile insinuations which they know I can’t respond to and which have no place on a board devoted to fighting ignorance in the first place.

I’ve been busy, so I haven’t been monitoring this thread. But enough is enough. I told you to drop this. Referring to your opponents remarks as “lies and vile insinuations” is deliberately inflammatory, and beyond what you needed to say to respond to anything in this thread. Marley has also advised you to let this drop, but you continue to make posts like this. I’m giving you a warning for failure to follow my instructions.

As I told Marley, however, upon reflection I’ve decided that the way the Paterno thread has progressed I can afford now to let the issue drop.

You keep saying stuff like this, but never seem to let it drop. It would be very good if your finally did so.

It’s a valid point because that is all part of what goes into the making of a good meme. The argument itself is one thing but your efforts to run around in every forum on the boards stamping out attempts to ‘give people the wrong idea about you’ by merely mentioning paper towel tubes with no insulting context is really what solidified it’s place as a board meme. The discussion about the warning in this particular instance is that it wasn’t a jab at you, it’s just a meme. Discussion of your overly emphatic attempts to ‘set the record straight’ while continuing to back the theory is a valid part of that discussion IMO.

You’re not prohibited from commenting on it. You’re prohibited from bringing it up when it’s off-topic because we don’t want threads to get hijacked. Any time someone revives this joke, it’s very likely Starving Artist is going to want to defend and re-explain his position on the subject yet again. If the thread is already about the Penn State scandal, that probably won’t be a problem. If it’s a thread about, say, a medical marijuana case, it’s a problem.

I’m not impressed by this explanation. It was an easy opportunity for a thread hijack and maybe a Jerry Sandusky joke was inevitable, but this was a joke about Starving Artist’s “defense,” not Sandusky himself. And people still made the decision to post it.

This is a more valid defense, but the whole reason it became an in-joke is the ludicrousness of what Starving Artist was saying. So it’s hard to separate the words from the mockery of the argument. It’s more like taking shots at, say, lissener regarding Paul Verhoeven movies in threads about something else. Even if it’s a comment about something the poster really did say and is not a total misrepresentation, it’s a provocation and it’s off-topic. That’s especially the case when the comment gets brought up over and over again in threads that don’t have anything to do with the original topic.

That’s exactly what we are not trying to do, and I don’t think it can really be done. You do have to live with what you post. But that doesn’t mean we’re cool with endless thread hijacks and potshots.

Ok I can pretty much get behind all of this. I still think a warning was too harsh but I doubt I can convince you otherwise.

Not only has it run it’s course, it’s causing new warnings which is less that productive. Boring acutally.

I’ll send this around the mod loop and ask if I was right or wrong. If wrong, I’ll reopen.
