How is it leagal to sell concert tickets on ebay? Actually, how is it that any event I go to, concert, sporting event, whatever, there are always scalpers and always cops but they just ignore each other? What is the Straight Dope on ticket scalping esp. on ebay?

PS. Don’t worry, I have my ticket to the pixies, I just feel bad for the people who will have to shell out 3 or 4 times the ticket price to go.

I think it depends on the state. In Ohio, reselling tickets is allowed at any value. In fact, you will see people with a vendor’s license around their neck selling Blue Jackets tickets around High St. all the time.

Yes, it depends on the state. In most places, the cops aren’t really big on enforcing scalping laws because really - if you wanna pay $500 to see The Pixies, who cares?

I know that in Georgia, the scalping law used to only apply to sporting events, as the law was apparently written people concerts became a big deal. I believe that they closed that loophole a couple of years ago, however. In any case, a lot of experimening was\is going on regarding scalping… I remember one year that scalpers were selling “$200 Braves hats with FREE tickets!”. I also remember one year the city gave them a roped-off area to sell their tickets. In any case, you’d better be sure to have a vendor’s license, as that’s Atlanta PD’s trigger to arrest you (if you don’t).
