Tell me a little about yourself and I bet I can find you at least a dozen groups with lobbyists in DC advocating for your interests. Lobbyists perform a useful function in DC by advocating for their clients’ interests and providing relevant information to Capitol Hill.
The media stereotype of a lobbyist isn’t all that accurate for the vast majority of folks lobbying in DC. Some are scum, certainly, and would sell their mother to make a fast buck. Most, however, are just regular people with a job that is routinely trashed by people who are ignorant of what they really do.
With a government as involved in as many aspects of life as is our federal government, it makes sense that there would be a variety of people out there trying to influence it. If you don’t like lobbyists, then support efforts to restrict the power of government. If the feds were not involved in road building, for instance, there would be no lobbyists out there trying to get earmarks for road building funds. If the feds were not involved in giving subsidies to energy companies, there would not be lobbyists out there trying to get special favors.
