Oh, yay, why is it that all y’all’s crazy people get shipped here?
Yea, Florence is NOT a relaxing place to be. It’s unfortunate, though, because it seems relatively clear (to me) from Loughner’s history, writings, and reports from friends and family, that he’s significantly mentally ill, and treatment for mental health issues in correctional facilities is…not good.
Oddly enough, one Florence inmate, Charles Harrelson, once stated that he enjoyed his time in the supermax, and that the “silence was wonderful”. Why was he there? Killing two Federal judges. Also a prior escape attempt. He was not a nice man. His feelings about the place may, of course, be atypical.
Side note: He was Woody Harrelson’s father. Really.
I have an uncle who was in Florence. Huge, fearless biker type. The guards beat him so badly and so often that he stutters now.
Sorry to wake the dead, as it were…
Jared Loughner has been found mentally unfit to face trial. Washington Post story here.
I find it reassuring that even though anti-gun groups have latched onto this and taken advantage of the tragedy to promote gun bans and restrictions, I have yet to hear the congresswoman come out in favor of gun bans. Damn gun-grabbing Liberals are always there to jump on a fresh carcass.
Well, in her defense, she was shot in the head. It might take her awhile before she makes any specific policy recommendations on gun control.
What sort of gun control could have prevented a criminal or mentally unfit person from gaining access to a firearm? Even the guy’s family should have done something, knowing that he was quite unstable. Her family has also not not come out in support of the Brady Bunch, the Coalition to Ban Handguns or any other extremist anti-gun groups. Arizona is a free state.
Boy-howdy, Loughner sure proved that, didn’t he?
I think that he mostly proved that laws intended to promote safety don’t mean squat to those either willing to do harm to others, or to those who are not in complete control of their reasoning ability. He’s a nut. Probably should not have been allowed out in public, let alone to possess a gun.
And the best way to make sure that someone like him doesn’t get a gun is to do away with all gun control?
Is that a question or a suggestion? I think that reasonable gun control is a good thing. I also think that some training should be recommended before a person owns a firearm.
“Recommended.” It’s a start. How do you feel about “required?” Or what about gun licensing? You know, the sort of stuff that makes your average hardcore gun-nut start talking about boating accidents?
Welcome to the SDMB, sprale. If you want to debate gun control, start a thread in Great Debates.
