I’m 63. Never had a garbage disposal in a home I owned, never _wanted_ one. Had one in an apartment decades ago. ---

I wonder too, but honestly, I think she is legitimately dumb. You just get a sense from the way somebody talks and acts. But if she’s acting dumb then give her an Oscar! She nailed it. ---

It seems an over-the-top “solution” to a “problem” that I’ve solved my entire life by just having a garbage can in the kitchen. We had a garbage disposal until I ran it with a fork in it. Then we didn’t have one anymore. ---

As a lifelong user of garbage disposals, I can assure you, nobody is going to stick their hand down a slimy garbage disposal unless they absolutely have to. ---

I generally think of politicians as being far more evil than stupid. My best guess on MTG and Lauren Boebert (to point to just two) is that they’re much closer to being both. ---

Never had one either. My mother was rather ……militant about it. Something about them fostering vermin and rodent problems in the sewer system. I knew what they were though, mostly because my mother hated them so much. I get what happened to AOC though. You have a “mystery switch” in your new home, you flip it and a loud grinding noise comes from the general vicinity of the sink. That would be startling, and it’s a funny story. ---

your mother was quite correct. there is a much happier and healthier rodent population in areas with a high concentration of garbage disposals. think smoothies for rats. ---

I have one now, it came with the house. (I never encountered one in the U.K.) I always thought it was just there so that your drain line did not get _accidentally_ clogged with small gobbets of residual food when you’re washing plates and pans. Do people really _deliberately_ dump substantial amounts of waste food into it? Why? What is the advantage of pushing food waste into a little hole and then pressing a button to grind it, when everyone surely has a regular garbage can with a much bigger hole nearby that seems like a much easier place to throw your garbage? ---

Believe it or not, some municipalities that have methane co-generation tied to their sewage plants are asking that MORE food waste go down the dispose-all instead of into the landfill. ---

For some reason my mother (blessings be upon her, and peace) insisted that the potato peelings on Thanksgiving be run down the disposal. Which meant that one of the holiday rituals was the Unclogging of the Kitchen Drain, a cast-iron pipe which had developed significant atherosclerosis over the years. And people wonder why Thanksgiving is my least favorite holiday. ---
