Just don’t say anything bad about “Cop Killer”, or you’ll be labled a straight-laced ol’ fogey that just doesn’t understand entertainment. Or a fascist that wants to throttle freedom of expression. Or some damn thing. ---

If that Bill O’Reilly quote is a death threat, then my mother threatened me with greivous bodily harm everytime she warned me that I was going to put an eye out if I didn’t stop running with scissors. The Beck quote falls just short of threatening death, but is still highly objectionable. ---

Note for the overly literal and the Homeland Security computer filing this with other threatening internet messages: I’m a liberal, so I don’t own a gun and wouldn’t know what to do with it if I had one. I’m not _really_ planning to kill the president. But were he to choke to death on his next pretzel, I can’t say I’d shed a lot of tears. ---

Let me retract my previous description. The O’Reilly statement is abhorrent, disgusting, illogical, wrong and tries to make an argument simply by invoking fear, but does not itself advocate murder. It _does_ link his opposition with someone’s point of view with their death, and O’Reilly is no stranger to generally raising the spectre of death for opponents. He fantasized on the air about being in an Old West gunfight with Al Franken and shooting him “between the head,” and also promised that a hit man would be visiting Franken’s home during his telephone harrassment audiotapes. O’Reilly is a weak-ass bully and a punk. I hope he suffers grievously from an impacted colon secondary to massive loufa blockage. ---

What O’Reilly was doing was calling attention to the fact that there are still a lot of people around that just don’t get the fact that there are bad people in the world who want to kill us…and we are getting down to their level to deal with them. Aggressively interrogate prisoners who may have knowledge of terrorist intent? Gasp! Keep some arrests secret while running down any valuable information from people who may be tipped off by knowledge of the arrest? Horrors! Let foreign governments know we mean what we say about harboring terrorists? Heavens to betsy! Have the gall to think that arab males between 20 and 50 might be a little more likely to be sleepers than granny O’Grady?
