> Subjectively, a vodka martini is junk (to me. The wife loves them.) But a properly-made gin martini (which will be disgustingly “damp” by today’s standards) can be sublime. With a twist, if you please. The lemon accents the botanicals so well.

I agree with your assessment of a really good martini. I notice that yours has no onion. 🙂

In your next ice cream cone, I challenge you to add an onion “garnish” that is SUNK INTO THE ICE CREAM, and say it doesn’t make much difference. You can even get juniper flavoured ice cream, if you want

What ever dumb bastard that decided that pickles and fried chicken go together needs his male bits drawn and quartered

Only time pickles and chicken needs to get near each other is chicken salad and even that’s a maybe

So kfc and anyone else that perpetuates that crap needs a never ending case of anal fleas …

Tequila gets a bad rap, but a flight of tequilas is awesome.

I kind of think it’s because bad tequila is SO bad, and mediocre tequila is pretty much ubiquitous.

However, the best reposados or anejos are up there with high-end scotch or bourbon as far as drinking straight is concerned.

Yep. a flight of repasados or anejos from several different distilleries is an eye opening experience.

Oh, man, I guess we gotta send my balls off into the chipper. Pickles and fried _anything_ go well together! (It’s just been engrained with me, growing up with Eastern European parents and a fairly traditional culinariy household, that you always serve something pickled with fried or fatty foods. It’s like bread and butter to me. But KFC doesn’t usually serve pickles with their fried chicken. Coleslaw is the standard side. Or do you mean on the sandwich? I’m not sure I’ve ever had one of their sandwiches, but just ask for it off, of course, and spare my manly bits! 🙂 )

KFC is just following Chik-fil-A’s lead in putting pickles on their chicken sandwiches. I agree with **puly** - the fried demands the pickle.

> I am a fan of Shevkoff, which I’ve only seen at Spec’s in Texas. Very smooth vodka, distilled from wheat. Not for Ketel One fans, but if you’re prizing absolute smoothness and next to no fusel funk, I’d recommend you try it. The blue lettered bottle isn’t too badly priced. The all black bottle is a bit more, and a bit smoother still, but still cheaper than things like Stoli Elit, and I think things like Ciroc and the oft-mentioned Goose.

Monopolowa used to be the best kept cheap secret in town. Now when Twin Liquors has their dollar days, those handles are the first to run out.

Honestly, I wouldn’t know. I don’t think I’ve ever had it. If I see it, I’ll buy a bottle and see what the vodka drinkers of the family think. I personally am not well-versed enough on vodkas to have any strong opinions, other than some vodkas are gag-inducing; some go down nice; and some are way overpriced. That’s about the range I have. 🙂

No, they are right, since it really isn’t FRIED chicken so much as really hot spicy chicken, the pickles help cool it, same as the celery and blue cheese with buffalo wings.

> This reminds me of the story about the guy who was planning a solo trip to the Amazon rain forest. A friend advised him to bring a martini glass, some bottles of gin and vermouth, and some olives. The guy asked why, and the friend said, “If you get hopelessly lost, just take the glass, put an olive in it, and pour in some gin and vermouth. Someone is sure to step out of the forest and say, ‘That’s not how you make a martini!,’ and you’ll be saved.”

According to Stephen Fry, that’s the only joke he has ever heard Prince Charles tell.

100% agree. A quick rinse is fine, does the trick nicely. It’s the timeless soak that gets you in trouble.
