I’m certain I’d like to have input if my kid was dead, but my understanding of the basis of criminal law is that the offense is considered to be against the whole of the citizenry (hence charges listed as “The people vs. John Doe”), partially to remove the ‘personal retribution’ facet of the punishment. I’m sorry someone you loved is dead, but how much you loved them or how good (or bad) of a person they are (and the ‘they’ here could be either the victim or the killer) should not be a factor in determining their guilt or the extent of the punishment. ---

Yep, I agree with that. It’s just an invitation to grandstanding in court (not that this was necessarily that) and gives an advantage to those who are very expressive over those who are naturally reticent of expressing feelings in public (like me). ---

A few days ago, the LAPD stopped a semi carrying 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks. The stop happened in a residential neighborhood, and the LAPD determined that the fireworks were too dangerous to move and that the best course of action was to detonate all the fireworks right there in a controlled manner.
