> How else do you propose compensating someone for the loss of a family member?

How about, instead of worrying about compensation for families of victims, you don’t deliberately cause the situation that KILLS people?

Or, when a federal judge says, “Stop doing that,” you fucking stop?

The citizens of Maricopa County have paid out the ass for the transgressions of Sheriff Arpaio. He has suffered zero consequences.

Something something “party of personal responsibility”.

Utah nurse dragged into an unmarked cop car and arrested at her job in a hospital for refusing to allow a cop to take blood from an unconscious patient. It is illegal for a cop to take a blood sample without a warrant or the patient’s consent.

Yeah, it’s \*unions \*that are the problem. Which is why teachers routinely murder people and get away with it—the power of the teacher’s union.

> That’s not what compensation means. You seem to think that financial compensation is inadequate, so what do you propose instead?

No killing their family members in the first place. Why are you so fixated on paying people who you have harmed or killed, when you could just not harm or kill them in the first place?

If you look around, you will actually see people that have won against PD’s taking things other than financial compensation, and instead, taken agreements with the PD that could lessen the number of people harmed or killed by the police.

Take James Blake, for example. He was assaulted by police officers for no reason, and when he complained about it, they iled and claimed it never happened. Were it not for the fact that there were security cameras, which were a pain to get ahold of the tapes from, it would have been his word against 5 cops, all of which claimed nothing happened, that there was no arrest, no tackle, no handcuffs. Then you see the tape, and you see that everyone of them was lying out his ass.

He didn’t want money, he wanted the NYPD to set up a fund and program to help to prevent this sort of thing from happening again.

> [@](#):
>
> I’m not saying that, I’m saying that the best that can be done for them is financial compensation, as we have no way of reversing events that have happened. There should also be punitive damages where appropriate to reduce further offences.

But no training, or discipline or hiring screening or any other method of preventing these thugs from donning a uniform and terrorizing the community. Just civil damages for the rare times they get caught.

> [@](#):
>
> But, as should be obvious, neither financial penalties, imprisonment, nor even execution completely deter crime. I’m not sure why you think that the police should be uniquely deterred when the rest of humanity isn’t.
>
> No matter what safeguards you put in place, harm will be done to people, whether intentionally, through negligence, or purely accidentally.

And that harm can be increased or decreased. If you do nothing to mitigate it, it will increase. There is nothing being done to mitigate it.

Your acceptance that police are going to be criminals, and there really is nothing to be done about that is pretty shitty. Don’t you want those upholding the law to be of a better caliber than those who are breaking it? You don’t have to hire every person that walks in and wants a badge. You don’t have to slack on hiring. You don’t have to keep your mouth shut when you know that your fellow officer is harming the community and the police’s relationship with the community with their actions.

You seem to think that it is impossible to hold the police to a higher standard than they currently represent. Why do you think that police cannot reform, and that they will always be the dregs of their communities?

> [@](#):
>
> That’s one of the main reasons police should wear body cameras, along with the deterrent effect. But you are wrong, if the cop is actually proven to be lying whoever is accusing the cop will have won, as the place that can be proven is in court.

You are wrong. The cop can be proven to be lying on 9 out of the 10 things that they are alleging against their victim, but the 10th stick, because you couldn’t prove wasn’t lying on that point. He is still believed over the victim, even though he was just lying.

There are plenty of cops who are caught lying in one trial, that go on to testify in the next.

> [@](#):
>
> Anyway, how is actually requiring evidence, and taking the time for a full investigation and proper trial a _bad_ thing?

Strawmanning again? Did I say that that was a bad thing? Do you ever get tired of being a dishonest bootlicker, or does it just come naturally?

Although, a full investigation and a proper trial would be nice, rather than the current system where they are investigated and prosecuted by their buddies. Why do you consider a full investigation and a proper trial a bad thing?

> I can’t get the video to play. But unless this cop has other allegations on his record, I am gonna go with gallows humor ‘bad joke’. Issue an apology, receive reprimand, be done with it, move on to more important stuff.

I could accept this if this person were caught saying this in a less significant context. As it is, he’s actually saying this while acting in the capacity of his job and interacting with someone. Someone already mentioned earlier that the driver might have black DNA. Even if she doesn’t, what if she’s married to a black man? What if she adopted a black child or was adopted by black parents? Even if she’s not, it’s an affront to the entire community that someone for a moment believes that this is even remotely appropriate behavior. It’s reflective of a culture, and black people and minorities will understandably see this as evidence that the criminal justice system is rigged against them.

White people have the luxury of dismissing this as a joke. There’s a history in this country, however. Black people and minorities are not in a position to view this as anything other than a potential threat to their civil liberties and standing in American society. Fortunately, that officer is gone.

I’m not hypercritical of police officers generally. I think most are basically decent and in my interactions, I can’t think of one who wasn’t anything less than professional. I also tend to think that people who go out of their way to be a smart ass to a cop are asking for trouble. But there can be miscommunication and sometimes officers can misinterpret simple questions as ‘resisting’ or ‘obstructing’ their official capacity. I suspect that explains incidents like the one in Georgia. Even one or a handful of bad apples can cause serious problems.

I understand officers have a tough job and it’s an occupation where a mistake can mean death - I get that there are things we don’t understand about their job. But we still get to judge and evaluate their performance, whether they like it or not. The key to better understanding, I think, is more transparency, not less. More body cams that cannot be turned off might be a start. More independent review boards. But most of all, more two-way communication between the departments and communities that they serve. More forums.

A bizarre aspect of this case is that the person whose blood they wanted to draw for testing wasn’t even a suspect of anything. He was a truck driver who had been hit head-on by a dude fleeing police. That guy didn’t survive the collision. Why the fuck was it so important to test the blood of a not-at-fault driver in a collision?

You want perfection, and when it doesn’t happen, you blame everyone, not just the few bad cops who are involved. That’s ridiculous, and more importantly counterproductive. Submitted for your approval, an A-hole First Class who could not take “no” for an answer from someone who KNEW what the law really was. Notice the lying threat that she would be charged with “interfering with an investigation”. Because that is the thing, it’s just a matter of that _ **anything short of absolute unconditional submission** _ gets called “obstructing” or “resisting” even if the LEO is the one who is clearly in the wrong, and apologists will tell us to just meekly submit and comply and then complain through channels later.

The way it is supposed to work is that when you say “show me the warrant”, if Mr. LEO doesn’t have one _he must just must back off_ until he can wrangle one unless there is one of a limited set of exigent circumstances, that were not happening here. This wasn’t even the suspect but an innocent victim! If necessary he could have had a warrant inside a half hour, _the ER had protocols in place for that._

But no, “show me the warrant” is heard as “I defy you” and you must be put in your place.

Meanwhile, Officer Useless of the U-Police could not bring himself to side with what war right and true when one of the parties was a brother cop. Weak!

Note to be made: medical professionals and clergy WILL know what the law is on their side and the good ones WILL stand on it.

The Salt Lake Tribune has a some articles about this.

People really should watch the video. This was not a dark alley, the policeman was never in danger. The nurse was calmly showing the protocol which the police department and the hospital already had in place and he simply snapped. There was no reason to suddenly grab her and manhandle her in that manner. All to frequently, the cops are doing this, and when the person reacts automatically, then that person winds up dead.

In [an editorial](http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/editorial/2017/09/01/tribune-editorial-theres-no-excuse-for-the-apparent-police-brutality-against-a-local-nurse/), the Tribune says:

> [@](#):
>
> Unless the investigations turn up something that is not now apparent, it seems clear that Payne should already have lost his job, and that his certification to be a law enforcement officer should be permanently revoked. The fact that he was removed from the roll of officers who are allowed to take blood samples, but not placed on leave until the matter became public and a criminal investigation launched, can only serve to undermine public confidence in the whole department.

And [just for fun](http://www.sltrib.com/news/2017/09/02/footage-shows-slc-detective-who-arrested-nurse-saying-hed-take-good-patients-elsewhere/), the cop also works as a paramedic, and was caught saying that

> [@](#):
>
> In a conversation with fellow officers, the Salt Lake City police detective who arrested a nurse when she followed hospital policy and refused to take blood from an unconscious patient commented that in the future he’d ”take good patients elsewhere.”
>
> . . .
>
> When the other officer tells Payne that the staff at the hospital probably won’t be very happy with him, Payne responds, ”I’ll bring them all the transients and take good patients elsewhere.”

Nice. Now he’s under criminal investigation, he may lose both jobs.

The fact that this thread is so long alone speaks to the fact that every single Police Department in every city needs to come under review and re-training. The problem is just as systemic as it was in Serpico’s day, and the “Blue Wall” is even thicker than in his time.

I don’t want perfection, I want improvement. Just because perfection is impossible does not mean that that should not be the direction that we go in. You seem to feel that since perfection is impossible, it is pointless to even try to improve the system.

You are lying about what I blame and how I feel. I have said on numerous occasions that I’d like to see cops better paid and better trained. How is that treating them like shit? You are the one that doesn’t want them to have to have any sort of hiring screening or training to make sure that they are able to do their jobs. Any suggestion of such is met by you with derision and lies about the motivations of those who suggest we improve the police force and its relations with the community.

> Lying, just like all those cops, obviously. Just because someone says something you don’t like it doesn’t mean they’re lying.

This is true, but it is because you say things that are factually and demonstrably untrue, and then insist on them, that makes you a fucking liar.

The 5 cops that all kept their stories straight and lied their asses off about what they did to James Blake, do you consider them liars? Are they liars just because they said things we didn’t like, or were they liars because they said things that were obviously and directly contradicted by the video once it was acquired (and that they did not know existed when they made their lying reports).

So, yes, you are lying, just like cops. You know what the truth is, but you refuse to admit it, because it might make you look bad, and because you think that you will get away with it. You know that the truth is right there in front of you, but you think that with enough lying and strawmanning and your other fucking ridiculous bootlicking tactics that it will somehow win you some sort of points.

It doesn’t, it just makes you a dishonest pathetic piece of shit fucking bootlicker. You do know that the cops don’t read these forums, right? You do know that your lies and defense for them here, they will not know about when they pull you over and violate your civil rights. You can go on and on about how you defended them on the straight dope, and how you attempted to confound their critics with your lies, but they won’t care. If they want to arrest and charge you to make their quotas, or because it is easier than tracking down the real criminal, or because they just feel like fucking with someone, and it is your lucky day, they are going to. And your grovelling at their feet will just get you laughed at and spat upon by the thugs in uniform that you so worship.

Good! Maybe a nice stretch **in prison** would teach him his proper place.

In addition, if I were the hospital administrator, I’d fire the hospital rentacops (or whatever they are) for letting him do it in the first place.

> But, as should be obvious, neither financial penalties, imprisonment, nor even execution completely deter crime. I’m not sure why you think that the police should be uniquely deterred when the rest of humanity isn’t.

Wrong again. The best that could be done for the victims of police abuse is for _ **the police not to abuse them in the first place.** _ Many of these bad cops you’re so fond of are multiple abusers; they do something obviously wrong, are put on paid leave for a few days; invited back; then kill or abuse someone else, take another paid vacation, and abuse someone else. Yet you continually defend them. Bah!

And in the 2nd part of your quote above, you almost brag that cops are human, and therefore just as criminal as the criminals. Wow!

Labor unions have been reduced to a shadow of their former selves. As a result of this, income inequality in the U.S. continues to soar.

… But you think unions are still too strong. :smack: What an ignorant right-wing dolt you are!
