I’m caught up through episode 6, and I’m still enjoying the show. The impression I get is that the show takes place in a world here discrimination based on race and sexual orientation is no longer a thing, but still has some problems with discrimination based on sex.
For example, the high school girls are still judged based on how sexy they are while the boys aren’t. At the same time, 4 of the 5 girls judged as the hottest in school are racial minorities, and none of the characters find this worthy of comment one way or the other. There’s various interracial relationships that are portrayed, which are also not commented on as anything out of the ordinary. Velma and Daphne don’t seem to be especially worried that they might be bisexual. We even have an interracial lesbian couple (Daphne’s adoptive parents) and a Black woman (Norville / Shaggy’s mother) that seemingly have more power and influence than the rich white guy (Fred’s father), mostly due to their positions as police officers and the school principal respectively.
Despite all that, the women are still judged based on their appearance, even by themselves. Maybe I’m way off base, but my guess is that this last part is what “woke” critics of the show have a problem with.
ETA: It seems that the discrimination based on gender swings both ways. The most recent episode had male police officers that were assigned to guard those 5 hottest girls quit their positions as bodyguards because the girls were sexually harassing them.
