Shit… this wasn’t “back in the day”.
At Love Field in Dallas, if you’d printed your boarding pass on Southwest’s website, you could roll up to security with about 15 minutes before your flight, and still have to wait at the gate.
You could do this right up until 9/11/01, at which point the Chicken-Littles took over, and now it’s a colossal pain in the ass to fly between Dallas and say… Houston.
As for the bulk food bins…beyond Brach’s candies, they’re not terribly common in your average Kroger or Albertsons around here, but EVERY specialty/gourmet store has quite the selection of bulk stuff- Whole foods and HEB Central Market come to mind.
As for me, the one that irritates me is razor blades. Back when I was younger (I’m only 33), you could get Trac-2 or Sensor/Sensor Excel blades for a reasonable price. Somewhere along the line, they’ve added a zillion blades and jacked the price up to somewhere near $2 per blade, and with really dubious results. I don’t notice much difference between old Sensor Excel blades and Mach 3 blades, and sure don’t like paying so much for them.
