It is not safe to cook foods over burning wood. For proof, one only needs to look at early humans. They learned to cook their food over wood, and none of them even survived the released poisons long enough to have offspring. Hence, early humans died off.

But the earliest humans routinely outlived trees and only started burning them out of spite for being so weakly.
