# Cool pictures caught by dumb luck thread

This was taken off the [Malahat Summit](http://www.flickr.com/photos/34504382@N00/2865442960/) on Vancouver Island when the sea fog rolled in. It has a surprise watercolor effect to it. My best guess is that I pressed the button too hard and bypassed the auto focus feature.

I was on the roof of my building watching the air and water show a few weeks ago, trying to catch one of the many awesome aircraft displays with my little point and shoot and came up with this [http://www.flickr.com/photos/30576791@N05/2864724943/](http://www.flickr.com/photos/30576791@N05/2864724943/). The dumb luck part was that I just lifted the camera up and hadn’t really gotten a shot lined up yet.

I’m not a photographer by any sense, and this [photo](http://flickr.com/photos/kellyjean/1353394556/in/set-72157601931678218/) was definitely a happy accident. It’s the large pond/small lake at the Hostel in the Forest in Georgia.

I was going to say mosquito, but yes, that grasshopper looks a perfect match. You can tell the flash fired on the picture and picked up the bug (which is much closer to the lens than it looks).
Reminds me of that [“meteorite” picture](http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041207.html) that [turned out](http://www.cloudbait.com/science/darwin.html) to be a [wasp](http://www.cloudbait.com/science/darwin_diff.jpg).
Still, it makes a cool fairy! 🆒

BTW, I thought at first that the big circular thing near the fairy was the moon, but it’s just a blob of out-of-focus dust. Unless you believe the [orb](http://www.psychics.co.uk/orbs/index.html) guys, of course…

A snap of my son, on our trip to California in March 2002. Neither kid had seen an ocean before, so on our first day there, we drove to the nearest beach access and let the kids run. Somehow, I caught Dweezil in mid-leap. You can tell he’s completely airborne by the feet and the shadow - there is no connection between them.

I just went through all my pictures, and if you knew me, you’d know that _any_ picture I take that is in focus is a stroke of luck. I chose these as being the coolest.

On a side note, I was lucky enough (about 10 or 15 years ago) to have access to the bell towers at Notre Dame. I walked up the tower on the left, and crossed over to the tower on the right on the uppermost connecting walkway you can see in that picture, and then came down the other tower.

I was waiting for this little girl to move away from the sharks so I could get a better picture. Then I got impatient and took the photo anyway.

I found this snake on the Erie Canal towpath one spring afternoon. I just set the camera on the ground pointed in the general direction of the snake and hit the button before it could get away.

A few years ago I was in Paris for Bastille Day. The parade on the Champs-Elysée was great, but the highlight was the fireworks display that night, coming out of the Eiffel Tower. I had staked out a position on the other side of the Seine, to get the fireworks’ reflection in the river. Wow! What a collection of amazing, touching, funny, and gorgeous photos! **labtrash** , Dr. Evil and the Devil Dogs made me laugh out loud!
Speaking of orbs, I took [this](http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m81/fwhited/PDRM1367.jpg) photo a few years ago on Christmas night. I really was just trying to get a picture of the pristine White Christmas snow and the window candles, but it was snowing when I took the picture, so…orbs!

That’s beautiful - I think the orbs really put you in the picture (at least, it does for this glasses-wearing snowy land dweller. 🙂 )
