Whoops, I was too quick on the trigger. What _is_ an “SUV,” anyway? Many of the newer ones, including the ones people have listed here (Nissan, I’m looking at you) don’t seem like they’re any more capable of off-road performance than the average Honda Civic. The promotional materials from the manufacturers list a whole lot more information about accessories and interior features than about suspension, ground clearance (not even mentioned by our friends at Nissan), or gearing. Our 86 Jeep Cherokee will die someday, and I’m not sure if we’ll be able to find a reasonable replacement, something that seats four people and a dog and can get over a bad road without anyone having to hold their breath. ---

Using that definition people dont need motorcycles or pickups or even cars. I dont need my my motorcycle, in the strict sense of the word…its not the most practical solution to my transportation needs. I think everyone should be driving SUV’s, myself. ---

What about the WWII-era VW Schwimmwagen? (not sure if I spelled that right?) Or an 60s Amphicar? OK, OK, they’re not technically “SUVs”, but they are sure a lot sportier than an overgrown station wagon, AND can go a whole lot more places, making them more useful (utile?!)… Bill ---
