Cops vs. Donuts?

Prior thread: What is the origin of the cops and donuts stereotype? - Factual Questions - Straight Dope Message Board

Following-up on a remark in that earlier thread, linked just above: Someone remarked that 7-11 wished to encourage cops to hang out there, e.g., with free coffee or donuts.

I’ve noticed a number of 7-11 stores, in cities I’ve been through (in California) that also have a prominently-marked designated parking space for a police car.

I used to work night shift for 7-Eleven way back when. It wasn’t official policy, but it was MY policy - cops got free coffee and cokes. I wanted my store to be a stopping place for the PD. As a result, stores were getting robbed right and left, but not mine.

I read the thread title as “Cops vs. Dracula” and talk about disappointed. Carry on.

Cops drink coffee. Coffee is usually available 24/7 at donut shops, convenience stores, and fast food joints. The donuts are just a bonus.

Check the steering wheel of cruisers for glazing residue.

When I worked in New Orleans and used a company car, there was a prohibition against eating Muffaletta sandwiches in the car, because the olive oil made the steering wheel dangerously slippery.

Well, that explains the holes in the donuts.

You really need to get your eyeglass prescription changed.

I was hoping this was about a new video game.

Which is kinda a bullshit thing to do. I used to drive an ambulance. I was expected, when I had to depart from the rig on a non-emergency, to park directly in front of the place of business so as to be able to affect a rapid departure if a call hit.

The next time you whine about a cop or ambulance “parking like a jerk right in the emergency zone” think about their response time. 7-11 was wasting their money.

Not necessarily. Even if the police parking space isn’t strictly necessary, it still sends the message to the police that they’re welcome and appreciated there. I know that I’d be more likely to frequent a business if they made it clear that they appreciated me specifically, and I don’t see why cops would be any different.

What kind of Pinko Communist doesn’t like donuts?

What else are they supposed to be doing while their on the clock? :smack:

Let’s not forget, cops are actually awake at 5am when the donuts are fresh and hot off the press.

A regular donut is good, but that same donut when it’s still warm and sticky right out of the fryer is to die for.

Someone who works in a doughnut shop? I never lost my love of them myself despite my year at Dunkin’ Donuts, but some of my fellow employees lost their taste for them.

The same with President Obama and ice cream – I’ve read that his teenage job at Baskin-Robbins soured him on ice cream to this day.

Just because you like something doesn’t mean you eat it on a regular basis.
