These are the best!
Love Corn Dogs, love them - at the fair only.
I don’t use mustard though - that sullies the cornbread taste.
Plain, YUM!
I also have been known to buy the “Super” sized dogs, that’s two hot dogs, end to end, years ago.
I don’t think I finished it though.
My kids swear by these.
Dude. I’d kill for a Wienerschnitzel nearby. There is (or was – I don’t know) one about 40 miles from my house. That’s the only one I know of up here.
But I don’t get the corn dogs. Wienerschnitzel is for Chili Cheese Dogs. Oh, yasssss!
And the mini corn dogs.
Turns out there are three Wienerschitzels in the State of Washington. One is in Vancouver, so it’s right out. The other two are on my way home from Seattle; one in Everett, and one in Arrrrrrlington. As it happens, I’m working in Seattle today…
hmmm…I am in very good health. Maybe because I have avoided the corndog all these years huh? I liked the analogy by the way. It is exactly what I am afraid of, it gets all talked up, I have one and will go ‘ehh’. Maybe I will just take a bite off the next one my kid gets, and keep any anticipation out of it.
I’ve never had one either. I feel like the Lone Ranger. It’s not to be missed, from what I hear.
Alright, but please do an extra workout or two when you get home. I don’t want to be responsible for any future heart disease.
I used to wonder what a corn dog was until I found they’re sold here as “pogos”.
Those Wienerschnitzel corn dogs are made of chicken. Forewarned.
I’m wondering how it’s possible to grow up in this country without ever eating a corn dog. When did they go on the school lunch menus? They were definitely there in the 70s, in my area, at least. But even if they didn’t serve them in your school, it seems odd - like saying you’ve never heard a Madonna song or something. I’m not sure I can trust any of you not to be terrorists until you’ve tried one.
Does anybody ever put ketchup rather than mustard on their corn dogs? It sounds fucking disgusting to me, but I’m sure there are people who must do it.
Man, you’re making me want a Corn Dog.
I’m game. What’s the difference?
Johnny LA, excellent ode to corndogs !
So, yeah, I don’t eat em anymore, being a veg, but, I still have an appreciation of foods as culture, and corndogs are meant to be enjoyed on the walk, in a fair, or other walking around event, sans plate. That’s their glory, cuz they’re on a stick.
Here’s some other food on a stick, courtesy the Wisconsin State Fair. I’m wondering about mac-n-cheese on a stick, sounds yummy— any Wisconsin folks that can describe it?
Corn dogs start with a cornmeal base, pronto pups with a wheat flour base.
When you bite into a freshly fried corn dog you feel the bite of the meal. Pronto pups are essentially hot dogs wrapped in not sweet pancakes.
I have, however, had pronto pups made with a beer batter and good german beef hot dogs. Nom ensued.
It’s actually the only hot dog that I would ever put ketchup on. No one ever taught how to eat a corn dog and that’s what I came up with. I’m not sure I would like mustard on them. I’ll give it a try though.
I’ve never had a corn dog.
I don’t think they exist over here. Closest we get are frankfurters inserted into hollowed out baguette-style rolls.
Is corn bread mix available over there? If so, it’s pretty easy to buy some decent-quality hot dogs, pat them dry thoroughly, dip them in prepared corn muffin batter, have the oil in a deep pan hot and ready to go, and fry 'em. Since hot dogs are already cooked, all you’re really trying to do is fry the batter.
If you don’t have cornbread mix, it’s easy to make cornbread batter from scratch. The Alton Brown video on the first page does give a couple of tips, even if he does use actual corn in his recipe: Dredge the franks in cornstarch and shake most of it off. Also, make sure your oil is hot. If the oil isn’t hot enough, the bread will absorb it.
