I’m trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup in my diet.

So, I had to go through several Light Ben & Jerry’s ice creams tonight at the store to find the one that didn’t have corn syrup. Not high fructose corn syrup, just corn syrup.

Is there a difference? Can I eat _all_ the Light Ben & Jerry’s with abandon?

please say yes please say yes please say yes

A diet high in fructose or sucrose is supposed to have detrimental health effects. Pure corn syrup is mainly glucose, not fructose. I am not a doctor. Trying to cut back on HFCS while eating other sweets with abandon does not seem like a good strategy.

> High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), also known as glucose–fructose, isoglucose and glucose–fructose syrup, is a sweetener made from corn starch. As in the production of conventional corn syrup, the starch is broken down into glucose by enzymes. To make HFCS, the corn syrup is further processed by D-xylose isomerase to convert some of its glucose into fructose. HFCS was first marketed in the early 1970s by the Clinton Corn Processing Company, together with the Japanese Agency of Industrial Sci As ...

>
> Corn syrup is a food syrup which is made from the starch of corn (called maize in many countries) and contains varying amounts of sugars: glucose, maltose and higher oligosaccharides, depending on the grade. Corn syrup is used in foods to soften texture, add volume, prevent crystallization of sugar, and enhance flavor. Corn syrup is not the same as high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which is manufactured from corn syrup by converting a large proportion of its glucose into fructose using the enzym...

According to [www.nutritiondata.com](http://www.nutritiondata.com), 1 oz of high fructose corn syrup has 79 calories, as does light corn syrup. Dark corn syrup has 80 calories. I’m assuming the ice cream contains light syrup.
