The American Indian Reservations have this tightly shut down. In South Dakota they have a near zero transmission rate because their police wont let anyone in or out except for food deliveries. Everyone’s income has been cut down. And while South Dakota might have a grip on this the Navajo Nation is getting hit hard. Apparently they wanted just a hair too long to lock down. ---

I think we peaked at around 30,000 cases and 2,000 deaths per day, but the last few days the increases have been slightly smaller than that, while the number of recoveries per day increases slightly. Yeah, well, you can’t say these pastors weren’t warned. I dunno - if God is supposed to shield the faithful does that mean these guys weren’t faithful enough? They didn’t pray hard enough? What? Or maybe the virus doesn’t give a damn. It’s not about faith, it’s about medicine and science. ---

This is separate from the pork processing plant where the idjits in charge apparently didn’t consider that cramming thousands of workers closely together in one building complex during a pandemic might have negative consequences. So _parts_ of South Dakota apparently have this under control and parts are out of control. ---

Today in Austria: [ul] [li] As promised, today **the lockdown was relaxed**. Shops with a floor area of under 400 m², as well as all home and garden stores, were permitted to reopen today. Social distancing rules for shoppers were enforced by security guards and by strictly limiting the number of people allowed in a store at any given time. Many home and garden centres had long lines outside even in the early morning, before the stores even opened for the day, though main pedestrianized shopping streets of Vienna and Graz, foot traffic had barely increased at all.[/li] As the first country in Europe to relax its lockdown, governments and news outlets abroad are now watching how the situation here in Austia plays out. You can check out, for example, [_The Guardian_’s coverage of recent events here](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/14/austria-reopens-small-shops-and-parks-as-coronavirus-lockdown-is-relaxed#maincontent). But somewhat strangely, the myriad press conferences held by the Austrian government over the past month have been open only to Austrian media; foreign journalists are barred from attending. This lack of openness has been criticized by the opposition parties. [li] So far Austrian companies have applied for **government aid to pay salaries** for 608,607 furloughed workers. The government has had to increase funding for this program from €3 billion to €5 billion.[/li] [li] At least 37 cities in Austria had temporarily suspended on-street parking fees (or enforcement thereof) in an attempt to encourage workers in critical jobs to drive to work rather than take public transit. As of today, many of these **cities are re-imposing normal parking rules** , and others are planning to do so in the coming weeks.[/li] [li] Current statistics: 14,159 confirmed infections, 384 deaths, 7633 recovered. The daily growth in new infections has fallen to 0.8%, with a doubling time of 39 days. It remains to be seen how these good numbers will be affected by the reopening of shops. [/li][/ul] ---

Alarming numbers released in the UK today by the Office for National Statistics. The five years average for numbers of deaths on the first week of April (and indeed for every week in spring) is around 10,000. This year in the same week 16,387 were recorded, 6,082 over the average. And this looks back over an early phase of the outbreak. 3,475 are accounted for by the official Coronavirus numbers. This means nearly half of the extra are unexplained. Theory is that some doctors have not put Covid-19 on the death certificates of people dying with respiratory problems because they were not tested, but also there is a concern that people with other conditions are staying away from hospital. ---
