> As of today, worldwide, there appear to be more people that have recovered from the disease than people actively sick. That in my opinion is a good sign.

In general, yes I would agree that it is a good sign. However, too much is still unknown about incubation period and actual spread of the virus to say the worst is over - I think.

[Here’s a statement](https://act.nationalnursesunited.org/page/-/files/graphics/NU-Quarantine-RN-press-conf-statement.pdf) from a nurse in NorCal who treated a COVID patient and then started showing symptoms. But the CDC won’t test them because they were wearing protective gear when treating the patient, so they obviously can’t have it. This is all kinds of messed up.

Is there a live map that tracks areas in the US with Covid-19 cases? There’s plenty of world maps that track countries, but nothing I can find for the US. It seems like someone, probably CDC has this data at their fingertips and could provide it to a map tracker, either government-made or by a third party.

If this situation were not a big enough cluster already, add to it the difficulty in even knowing who has the disease in this country.
-CA expected the capacity to test a million people by this weekend. They are at about 7000.
-Nurses who treat sensitive patients can’t get tests. Glaringly sick people can’t.
-The stupidity of the Trump administration’s response is inexplicable. How many people are the CDC testing? Who knows, they took that information off their website! And Trump keeps lying about this thing in public. Even taking it as a given that these guys only care about stock prices and reelection, this isn’t the kind of thing that can be muzzled like a hooker with an NDA. Thousands of deaths won’t help anything. Lockdowns and quarantines everywhere will tank consumer spending, crashing markets further.

I am convinced this will get worse before it gets better. I think the Seattle school closings are just the beginning- it will happen most everywhere. Am I overreacting? Convince me! Tell me how to set aside the fact that a deadly, contagious virus is spreading mostly in secret, on both coasts and also in the Rockies. How does this not blow up?

It’s not the fear of getting sick that would stop me. It’s the fear of all ports of call being canceled, and being locked in my cabin for 2 weeks because one other person got sick.

Not feeling very good about this, as I live an hour and a half away and will be flying out from Omaha in June. Looks like they took steps right away at the hospital, but who knows who might have been infected beforehand.

I agree with you about the lack of testing and the removal of testing numbers from the CDC website. In my mind this is the biggest worry. The US is not doing a good job of testing whatsoever, and this will contribute, I think, to bad stuff.

> It’s one of the most urgent questions in the United States right now: How many people have actually been tested for the coronavirus?
>
> This number would give a sense of how widespread the disease is, and how forceful a response to it the United States is mustering. But for days, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has refused to publish such a count, despite public anxiety and criticism from Congress. On Monday, Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, estimated that “by the end of this week, close to a million tests will be able to be performed” in the United States. On Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence promised that “roughly 1.5 million tests” would be available this week.
>
> But the number of tests performed across the country has fallen far short of those projections, despite extraordinarily high demand, The Atlantic has found.
>
> “The CDC got this right with H1N1 and Zika, and produced huge quantities of test kits that went around the country,” Thomas Frieden, the director of the CDC from 2009 to 2017, told us. “I don’t know what went wrong this time.”
>
> Through interviews with dozens of public-health officials and a survey of local data from across the country, The Atlantic could only verify that 1,895 people have been tested for the coronavirus in the United States, about 10 percent of whom have tested positive. And while the American capacity to test for the coronavirus has ramped up significantly over the past few days, local officials can still test only several thousand people a day, not the tens or hundreds of thousands indicated by the White House’s promises.
> …

This is a long article (paywalled for non-subscribers). The end:

> [@](#):
>
> …the United States’ response to the coronavirus is far behind the spread of the disease within its borders. Testing is the first and most important tool in understanding the epidemiology of a disease outbreak. In the United States, a series of failures has combined with the decentralized nature of our health-care system to handicap the nation’s ability to see the severity of the outbreak in hard numbers.
>
> Today, more than a week after the country’s first case of community transmission, the most significant finding about the coronavirus’s spread in the United States has come from an independent genetic study, not from field data collected by the government. And no state or city has banned large gatherings or implemented the type of aggressive “social distancing” policies employed to battle the virus in Italy, Hong Kong, and other affluent places.
>
> If the true extent of the outbreak were known through testing, the American situation would look worse. But health-care officials and providers would be better positioned to combat the virus. Hard decisions require data. For now, state and local governments don’t have the information they need.

This cruise ship case is so similar to the one in Tokyo that it almost seems like a test.
Did we learn anything? Did we learn that close confinement within a ship will lead to hundreds of cases? Certainly some preventable deaths. Did we learn that those people need to be transferred to land based quarantine _before_ everyone is infected?

It looks like we learned nothing. If they keep those people in quarantine on that ship, I’ll be ashamed.

The US deserves whatever this virus does to us. We had a two month head start and did nothing. Fortunately it isn’t all that fatal. Unless you happen to be a little older. Or you are unlucky.
