Assuming doubling every 7 days, as they do, we only get to 96 million infections if there are 375,000 infections in the US right now, right?

Something I was wondering: how much good the mandatory work from home policies initiated by companies like Microsoft in the current hotspots will do. I mean, I figure some expert must’ve told them it would do some good, or they wouldn’t have done it to begin with, but I wonder just how much it’s necessary, and how much is bowing to the realities of worried employees.

Remember: We are NOT going to stop this. BUT - anything we can do to slow it down will help the medical system cope with a potentially overwhelming situation. And that is a valuable thing.

We should be encouraging people to get their flu shots. Not because it protects against the coronavirus - it doesn’t - but because we _can_ actually prevent the flu fairly well (and studies show that people who get the flu despite being vaccinated get less sick) and free up a ton of hospital beds for coronavirus patients.

> GOP Sen. Ted Cruz said Sunday he will remain at his home in Texas after learning that he shook hands and briefly chatted with a man in suburban Washington who has tested positive for coronavirus.

> [@](#):
>
> Cruz said he met the man being treated for coronavirus 10 days ago at the Conservative Political Action Conference in suburban Oxon Hill, Maryland. The Texas Republican said he’s not experiencing any symptoms, feels fine and has been advised by medical authorities that the odds of transmission were extremely low.
>
> Yet, Cruz said, out of an abundance of caution he will remain at home in Texas for another few days until a full 14 days have passed since the interaction. He said medical authorities advised him that those who have interacted with him in the last 10 days should not be concerned about potential transmission.
>
> David Popp, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Sunday evening that no changes have been made in the chamber’s schedule in the wake of Cruz’s decision to remain in Texas.
>
> The Senate has a vote scheduled Monday evening and plans to be in session this week considering energy and possibly other legislation. The Senate and the House are set for a one-week recess the week of March 16.

Who is in the “older Americans” age group? Anybody over age X? People age at different rates. You might have a fit, healthy 65 year old in better shape than a 20-something. Is the fit 65-year-old still at high risk?

Also, many people seem to assume that planes spread infection via the air that’s recirculated, but the fact is, the air is NOT recirculated. I assume then the risk is greater because people are in close proximity to each other for a few hours. If so, does that mean buses and trains are just as dangerous?

The situation in Italy is very sobering. With just over 7,000 cases there are interviews with Italian doctors talking about the pressure on beds and how they are using hospital corridors for intensive care.

The BBC just interviewed a doctor who said that one of their mistakes is in thinking that this is a virus that only affects old people. They are treating people of all ages over 30 and he says young adults are most responsible for the virus’s spread.

There is also a sense that this is much worse (for Italy) compared to the picture they expected when studying what happened in China.

There’s a good age-bracket graph [here](https://www.businessinsider.com.au/coronavirus-death-age-older-people-higher-risk-2020-2?r=US&IR=T). You can probably reduce your own absolute risk by healthy behaviours like not smoking, but I think the shape of the graph makes clear that age in itself is a big risk factor (I don’t really think 50-59-year-olds have three times the smoking/sedentariness/etc that 40-49-year-olds do … or even that 30-39-year-olds are as healthy and active as 10-19-year-olds)

I’d say … worry somewhat if you’re over 50, worry lots if you’re over 70
