Well, I’m guessing she’s not starting from the default state being no spread. So there’s that.

Default State Being No Spread.
I almost understand what you intend to say.
But not quite.

ETA: actually, the more I read it the more confused I am. What does that mean?

It means that viruses spread. It’s what they do. It’s what they’ve always done. It’s what they’ll always do. It is not complicated.

People try to stop the spread of viruses. It’s what they do. It’s what they’ve always done. It’s what they’ll always do. It is not complicated.

It also makes more sense than having a virus run rampant through the population unabated, killing people.

Here’s a fascinating article in the NEJM this month about virus transmission among Marine recruits in quarantine. It’s hard to imagine any municipality enforcing restrictions better than the military can. They threw everything at it (and then some). Still got spread.

… without digging too deeply into the study, but what do you think this means?

> CONCLUSIONS
> Among Marine Corps recruits, approximately 2% who had previously had negative results for SARS-CoV-2 at the beginning of supervised quarantine, and less than 2% of recruits with unknown previous status, tested positive by day 14. Most recruits who tested positive were asymptomatic, and no infections were detected through daily symptom monitoring. Transmission clusters occurred within platoons. Not sure if you were pointing me to any one thing in specific, but the basic design was that they asked the recruits to self-quarantine for two weeks before arriving at the campus and then put them through very carefully supervised quarantine for two more weeks. Some of the infections were likely brought it from the self-quarantine period, and some were found to happen on campus. All in all, it was about two percent of the recruits infected, I think in either period (meaning self-quarantine or supervised quarantine). That would seem to suggest that some spread will happen even in the strictest of environments?

Sticking a bunch of guys in a barracks would require something quite miraculous to prevent spread of something so contagious as this corona virus, military discipline or not (not to mention that the goal of military training is to learn discipline, not having it magically) . It is a bit strange to say that corona measures in a barracks could ever be more effective than people staying the fuck home.

…I think (as with every other study you’ve cited) you’ve reached a conclusion at odds with what the study _ **actually** _ concluded.

… for more context: there is a reason why in NZ managed isolation they are quarantined for 14 days and are tested on day 3 and day 13. And it isn’t because covid-19 spontaneously appears out of nowhere. The results seem to line up exactly as expected.

But all this does seem a bit off topic. If you would like to open your own thread to discuss your creative interpretation of the scientific evidence I’d love to take part.

You have a way of phrasing things that does not always ooze coherence.

Viruses spread.

That’s not complicated, you’re correct. It’s also a statement with all the revelatory power of: “Water is wet.”

OK. So the Governor thinks the default state (of what?) is that viruses spread. Alright. And then what? What’s next? She goes directly from “viruses spread” to “but don’t try to help stop that spread if you don’t feel like it because you have the Freedom to spread deadly disease.”

As I politely hinted at in my previous post: what the hell are you on about _now_?

They gave them antibody and PCR tests on arrival (which some failed). They recognize that some may have passed the tests yet still have been incubating the virus.

I’m really at a loss here. You said you didn’t dig too deeply into the study, so I (having read it in full myself) tried to summarize it for you. I don’t know if you’re reading something into the conclusion that’s not in the study, or what. The results of the study are pretty straightforward.
