Will Donald Trump take his own medicine?

[Trump says he may take drug to treat coronavirus, questions states’ ventilator needs](https://news.yahoo.com/trump-says-may-drug-treat-012119100.html), _Reuters_, April 5, 2020. (Yeah, that’s still tomorrow in my time zone :dubious:)

> [@](#):
>
> WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Saturday doubled down on his support for a drug that is still being tested to treat the coronavirus, saying he might take the medicine himself and encouraging others with doctor approval to do the same.
>
> . . .
>
> Trump’s optimistic comments on Saturday about the benefits of anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, reflected his tendency to put a positive spin on an issue even as data was still being gathered.
>
> “I may take it,” Trump said. “I’ll have to ask my doctors about that, but I may take it.” Trump has been tested twice for the coronavirus, according to the White House, and both times the results were negative.

I’ve read (in the news and on this Board) that it’s getting hard to find, with so many people snapping it up. Hope Trump is able to get his supply. I think aquarium supply stores may still have supplies.

The first two claims are not verifiable but the last claim is true and accurate. My napkin math says most likely the US will top 20,000 deaths on 8 April but no later than 10 April.

^^If 20% population of the world is High risk (old age person, healthcare worker etc) and we make 10 pills for every high risk person, then the need is atleast 15 billion (1500 cr. ) pills worldwide. Minus China(I think they can make for themselves, they have the capacity), the need would still be 12 billion pills.

A lot of people are staking a lot of hope on something that’s probably going to turn out to be worthless.

Yes, we have just begun studying hydroxychloroquine against the coronavirus. Yes, it will kill the virus in vitro. But it really just isn’t that promising. These early stage studies non-blinded studies aren’t very rigorous and are vulnerable to selection bias and placebo effect - not to mention that that it’s pretty easy to cheat on them. There has always acceptance of the methodology in spite of this, because normally it would be followed by a series of increasing rigorous double-blind trials.

Scientists have been studying the potential of hydroxychloroquine as an anti-viral for 40 years. Nothing has planned out yet. It’s been proven ineffective against flu. It was ineffective in early tests against SARS-CoV, a virus that is very similar to coronavirus.

Too many of the doctors pushing this treatment seem sketchy and far too eager to be on Fox News. The original French study, which piqued the interest of the right wing media machine, was incredibly flawed. And even that study didn’t show much success for the hydroxychloroquine without the Z-pack.

At this moment, Trump is like a stage 4 cancer patient grasping at straws. He desperately believes. Reading between the lines, I’m pretty sure Trump thinks he’s going to be able to give everyone in America a pill and send them to church next Sunday. The wrongheadedness is scary. It’s important to remember that this drug HAS been studied as an anti-viral with no success.

There were few more studies after the original French study which also show efficacy. Anyone interested may look them up online… Coupled with that there are individual doctors and patients with their findings and experiences.

There are also a lot of people with effectively magical beliefs who are desperate for some sort of cure or control for this disease, whose individual opinions, even taken collectively, should inspire scientific research but should not substitute for it.

If you’ve invested yourself in a belief, it’s very difficult to see the situation in an unbiased way.

Here is a list of studies which cited the French article; unfortunately the majority have high access costs so are only available to patrons of major libraries and not to the general public (without paying a lot of money).
