Pregnant women are at high risk for complications from covid, both for themselves and for their pregnancies. Even if the drug does cause birth defects it might lead to better outcomes than not taking it. ---

The surges in new COVID cases in Alaska, like the previous one i Florida, seems to have abruptly calmed down. Most of the Johns Hopkins COVID trends in the US is now in the blue, or at least only pink. the sole case of a new record high in daily reported cases (7 day average) is **Maine** , which hit 713 on October 1, from which it has since retreated slightly. ---

Not really breaking news at this point, as I heard it a couple of weeks ago. ICU beds are becoming available in Washington… because Covid patients are dying. ---

68.5% of people with first dose (80% 12 and over). 41.5% fully-vaxxed and increasing rapidly. So they have blasted past the US in the first dose and will surpass the US in fully-vaxxed within the next few weeks if their rate continues. This phased reopening is very safe. The delta thing has been decimating zero-covid strategies all over our region. New Zealand’s strategy is a “whole country” one, in Australia each of the states was in charge of its own suppression strategy (but as far as I know they were all targeting zero-community-cases until recently). NSW, Victoria and Queensland have all pivoted to “living with covid” strategies over the last few weeks, and it’s delta that’s done it - it’s just that much more contagious. However, living with covid _in a vaccinated population_ is VERY different to doing it without vaccination. I don’t know what NZ’s long-term strategy was, but here, it was always “shut up shop while we get a vaccine” Also, separate comparisons of first-vax and second-vax rates aren’t really informative. In both Aus and NZ it’s simply a case of get as many jabs in arms each week as you can (and yes, the rollout was sleepy and slow both countries, but it was never general unwillingness, it was government organization and supply) ---
